here is the story, battery was not charging on the magnum so I replaced the voltage regulator as it had bad diodes. It still wasn't charging so I replaced the stator. After I got it back together it took some try to get started. Let it warm up a while. and watched the voltage gauge I installed. It was reading about 13.5 volts.So I try to rev it up to see if voltage goes up. To my surprise the engine starts to stumble, bog and backfired then died. It ran perfect before I changed the stator. I started it up again (it started right up) let it idle while I took access panel off to check an see if I knocked anything loose And was watching the tach to check Idle speed Idle speed is between 980rpm to 1010rm. Didn't see any thing loose, so I goose the throttle is shuddered backfired then died.I find it strange that All I did was take side cover off engine and replaced stator and I started this problem. I gave up on it for the night. Any comments as to why?

, Who did you get your stator from? If you didn't get it from, Rapid repair Jim it that maybe your problem I got 3 Zodiacs from Ice Bear when I need stock parts he is the man I go no other place because he knows what he sells he makes sure before he sells and ships.Any part I ordered from axles,to cdi,s rims,tires,lights,belts many more to list they were spot on.

Double check your trigger wires.

i would think the idle should be around 1200rpm ,,,also i think 13.5 volts is low,,i'd like to know what the voltage output is at a higher rpm than idle,,,are you letting it idle to get really warm so it comes off of the enricher?,,,

I would also check the woodruff key to me sounds like it is out of time especially backfiring when given throttle.

alley is correct once again,,i'd give the key a look it may ahve sheared and not quite spun enough to not let it run

Just about any really old guy probably has a timing light, I do any way. It's hanging in a shed out back and is red....I think!

I got an old VW Bus that still uses points & condenser.

I'm an old guy, turn 66 yesterday, and I sold all my antique motors test equipment two years ago. I remember the guys eyes bugging out when he saw the induction pick-up timing light. The last time I had used them was in 1998.

I think I still have a dwell meter someplace..... back to the op.. it's not that hard to install a new stator and lose the woodruff key, I've done it lots of times.

If the key comes out as you are assembling more than likely it will stick to the magnets in the flywheel so you will never see it. Easy to check, take out plug, straw in hole and see if timing mark and top dead center are the same. Some one say dwell meter? got one too.

Check the pulse coil and it's mounting, very easy to mess it up when putting a new stator on.
