Hello everyone, I just bought a beat up 2012 tao tao 49 cc scooter and have a bunch of questions I read a lot of the posts on here last night to familiarize myself a little. And learned quite a bit from a couple of posts but have questions about some mods for this little beater. Such as which ones to look at which ones to pass on the difference between performance and the red hot cdi, coil and also the best place to gets parts and such. Sooo.... Step 1. Upgrading the Cdi, coil, plug and belt because this one is hit!! lol Step 2. Variator, clutch, and bore kit. Step 3. Some new panels because someone laid this poor thing down once or twice and so forth. Step 4. Enjoy!! Basically I want to get as much out of this little putter as I can get. And yes,I know why not just buy a bigger one then? Because I am disabled sitting at home bored out of my mind and love to tinker. So first a little beater then I will move up in advance.

Here is where you can get all your performance parts as well as none performance parts for a good price. The site also may have some of the panels you are looking for. Supposedly the RED HOT COIL puts out more volts but has not been verified. Besides for what you want to do it will do nothing for you. Just get the orange coil and cdi that will give a little better spark as well as a little advanced on the timing. Alleyoop www.scrappydogscooters.com/139QMB_50cc_Performance.html

just realize, if your 50cc starts going too fast you'll be needing a motorcycle license in most states.

Yea Olivertwist and Rosie they are some cool gals and get into it really good and In my opinion know more than some of the shop mechanics A 52BBK you would need to bore the case it will not fit. So go for the 50 or lower. The speedos are all off on all the scoots they come close to actual mph if you have a 13 inch wheel. They use the same gearing in the hub for all the scoots and they never change the gearing in the actual speedos. So expect 10%-20% registering on the high side and the faster you go the more it is off. Alleyoop

Cool, glad my experiments and posts are helpful! Alleyoop is right about the speedometer. My bike has the bigger style tires, not sure on the size, but anyway right around 25mph is where my speedometer starts drifting off from real speed. 40mph on the needle = 36 real mph for me, so I have to go 45 to actually go 40, according to my phone's GPS! For about 5 years I thought every car was just speeding 5 or 10 over because my needle was right on the speed limit, lol.

Thanks Alleyoop, would the trans gears be something to change out as well or is it not really worth messing with? And is one kit better than the other for the bore kit there are a few different ones hate to spend the loot on junk:) Actually Rosiemoto most do go 5 to 10 over I know I do

Changing tranny gears is actually very easy, but you have to remember you must have the low end torque to pull the taller gears otherwise you will have a slug for starts and mid-range. For getting more top end if you can pull the taller gears it is the best mph for the bucks. For every gear tooth you go up and down you can expect at least 3 more mph. Usually 50s come with 15/51 gearing and 150s 13/40 gearing. The 250s I know the final drive gear is 35 I do not know what the counter shaft gear is but that is a very tall gear, that is why they can cruise over 70mph at low rpms. But here again they have 250cc lots of low end torque to pull the tall gears. Alleyoop

Too tall a final gear and you will go slower! Had an 80 dodge long van brand new at work with a manual 5 speed that could not pull 55 in the 5th gear if there was a head wind. Get it up to 55, shift to 5th and it went slower! Had a small 6 for engine.....big, big miss match.
