My scooter has 2500 miles. I'm thinking about going synthetic. I've read where it will run much cooler with synthetic, which is always a good thing. Sounds like oil changes should be at the same interval. There is an Amsoil dealer up the road. So I'm thinking 10w-40w Amsoil full synthetic scooter. Is that the best protection I can get?

I noticed a 75* difference lower on back to back runs same bike same day ( a hotter part of the day to boot) with my dr350 dualsport,,,,easier shifting also,,,have not switched my scoot over yet but I plan to,,,,I'm sure I'll see a huge difference in the performance,,,especially the shifting

Changed my oil to Amsoil Synthetic 10w-40w SCOOTER oil! Over $11 for a quart, but if it prolongs the life of the engine it's worth it. Oil screen had a little crap in it, didn't look like metal, just black crud, not much.

I wish I had our money.....I just paid $12.99 for a gallon of my favorite oil.....oh, and there is a $5.00 mail in rebate. That makes it $7.99, or $2.00 a quart, or $1.50 per oil change in my 150cc scooter, $8.00 per change in either of the BMW's, or $4.00 to do the Ural.
Maybe if I were rich I'd use synthetic......but I seriously doubt it.

Rich? No, quite poor actually. I just want my little scooter to last as long as I can get it to, I cant afford to replace it. If I treat it right, I'll die before it does. After riding big bikes all my life, this little 250 scares me, such a little engine pushing my fat @ss around, I'll treat it as good as I can. And here in Florida, heat can be a problem. If I can lower the temp by using synthetic, I'll use synthetic.

The debate will rage on and on FOREVER!!!! I use synth,,,my big bike takes 2 quarts exactly and the scooter takes one,,,I watch the sales and buy it by the case,,and with the extended period changes it works out about the same money wise,,,,I have had gasket weep tho,,,very minor but still it's there,,,,I found a pretty good decrease in temps,, and improvement in shifting so I'm sold,,,there's a reason all race teams use it,,it works,,,case in point,,,,a very good friend of mine has a gsxr1000,,,at 50,000 or so miles we tore it down,,,one valve was out .001,,,, and no discernible wear anywhere,,,,,i mean anywhere,,, some guys just putt around on their scoots and it doesn't get hot hot there Dino oil is plenty good,,,,but it gets so hot here August thru early October dogs literally Yelp walking across parking lots because their paws are getting burned,,, I want the added protection synth provides,,,

I figure I'll change oil about every six months, if that, $22 a year doesn't require wealth.

Not many rich people ride scooters......and those that do, wouldn't be changing their own oil. So please don't take offense......I was joking....stirring the pot a bit.... And, you really don't need to be rich to use a synthetic oil. NAPA Autoparts, has their brand of full synthetic on sale til the end of the month for $2.99 a quart. Made by Valvoline, any weight you want, even a 15W/50, for those of you in the tropics. Then there is Shell Rotella T6, full synthetic, 5W/40.....on sale at Autozone this month for $21.99, and it has a $5 mail in rebate. I run this in my late model Camaro, due to an issue some have had with premature timing chain wear, running a 5W/30 synthetic, designed strictly for gas engines. So.....I do use synthetic in one of my vehicles. But the bikes all get Mobil Delvac 15W/40......"the million mile oil"

With the super frequent oil change intervals of these scoots with no filtration to speak of I'd lean Dino oil ,,,My scoot has a filter and change intervals much longer than a gy6 based design,,,and a 4 speed gearbox,,,so it's a different animal,,,

Yes, frequent is right. I've been using a 600 mile interval.....but I'm thinking of increasing it to 900 miles. With my scooter having averaged 87.2 miles per gallon over the last 2+ years, I've been burning only 6.9 gallons of gas per oil change. Because I have installed, and monitor a catch can, I know blowby is almost non existent.....so I probably could go 900 miles easy....without hurting anything.
But, when it only costs $1.50 or $2.00 to change it........what the hell

Even at 3600 per change on mine,,, the oil came out at the last change was clean enough to go into my work van,,, after all I am a notoriously CHEAP BASTARD,,, I do have a reputation to uphold

As a side note I'm with Rks on this one,,, I think after a good solid break in,,, I would wager a guess you'd be safe till 1000 miles the way oils are nowadays,,, after the engine stops shedding metal,,, 1500-2000 miles,,, the only thing that spooks me about gy6 engines is oil pressure and no filter,,, just a screen,,, shades of type 1 VW engines!!!!!!

In scooters should we be using motorcycle oil or regular car oil since there are no clutch packs in the engine?

I've run car oil in air-cooled motorcycle engines for decades in blazing hot heat,,(I live less than 100 miles from death valley),,, rode my scooter (2013 genuine Stella ) 100 mile round trip in 117-120* heat and the scoot wasn't quite passed the recommended break in period by genuine but it was real close,,, not one peep from my little monster,,,, and I pulled some serious hills doing it,,, all with car oil,,,,man I love that stupid little thing,,, I'd buy another in a heartbeat

A lot of the guys riding chinese dirt bikes swear by rottella. I have it in my klx right now and its about ready to change.
One fellow had 70,000 miles on his 200 or else it was a 250cc when he retired it and the engine was still going strong using rottella.
