Yeap, that is what it cost me to change my 150's oil this weekend. I bought several gallons of oil earlier this year (Mobil Delvac 15w/40), when a $5 per gallon rebate was in effect, making the final cost (including tax) $9.03 per gallon. I can only get my scoot to take 24 ounces after an overnight drain, with both plugs removed. So, it figures out to just under $1.70. You can't beat that with a stick...IMO I also emptied and measured the contents of my crankcase breather's catch can. General do this every other oil change and record. This tells me, that this little engine is a long, long way from being worn out. More info on the catch can link

Being new to this I have some questions about scooter oil. The my understanding that the key difference in motorcycle oil from regular engine oil is that the motorcycle has clutches in the engine which require different oil.
Do people use motorcycle oil or regular engine oil in their scooters?
RKS I see that you are using diesel motor oil. What is the idea behind that?

Motorcycle oil has no friction modifier additives/ Scooters do not have liquid clutches like motorcycles. Diesel oil has additives that are good for small engines like zinc that inhibit wear. I don't recommend long periods between oil changes on small engines as they do on diesels but their oil is a real tough oil and the big trucks go unbelievable distances per change. I have rotella in my small engines as do many of the dirt bikers.

I not only run diesel oil in my scooter, but also my Ural, both of the BMW's, the 11 year old Cub Cadet with 1200 hours of run time, my 2011 Camaro, my 1966 Pontiac LeMans, and of course the Kioti CK30. Why? Because it is better suited to an engine of the flat tappet design, like our scooters.....and it just plain lubricates high stress areas better.
Some will say "Your air cooled bike runs hotter than liquid cooled vehicle, so it needs a motorcycle oil" I say that's bull poo. I have a VDO Oil Temp gauge installed on my scoot. It doesn't climb any higher than the oil temps on my old Cummins, or Caterpillars used to, when put to work on a long grade. Even my Subaru Forester's oil will reach 220* on a warm day climbing out of the valley.
I've used countless gallons of Rotella, even own a few shares of Royal Dutch Shell, and run their 5w/40 in the Camaro.......But I prefer Mobil Delvac in my other stuff........There is a reason it's called "The million mile oil"

I live in very hot humid climate with demanding traffic.
However, my scooter is liquid cooled which helps.
I don't have an oil temp gauge but do have a coolant temp gauge.
I would like to do everything I can to keep internal engine temps down and very well lubricated.

Opinions on oil are like butts......everyone has one. Not having much info on your scoot, whether you ride year round, what area of the country you call home, etc, etc.....puts us at a disadvantage. Read this thread, (found on this forum), and your owner's manual, and then decide. Oils

I use synthetic myself and have noticed ( measured ) a 65-70 * lowering of running temps on an aircooled dualsport on back to back runs ,,,same course in a slightly hotter part of the day,,,but still running Dino oil in my Stella ,,and rode 100 miles in 110*+ heat before break in period was over but it was close,,,keep your oil changed regularly and you'll be fine,,,

I don't know what the previous owner used but I went full synthetic. I researched synthetic oil when it first became a mainstream thing And was surprised with the wear results from before and after.
The diesel oils though, never considered the zinc and other additives. I will have to look into that..
I do use two staple oil additives in everything, STP and motorkote.
I am certain they helped me get 230,000+ out of my very regularly Abused throw away 4 banger.
Those that use the diesel, are you using this as well in the final drive?

Those that use the diesel, are you using this as well in the final drive? Read more: scooterdoc.proboards.com/thread/13032/1-70-oil-change#ixzz4IRFgNW6EI always use gear oil in a gear box. But, the manual for my Ural calls for 20w/50 in both engine and transmission. Don't quite understand why you would want an engine oil in something that has no combustion going on. Mine gets 15w/40 up front, and Valvoline 80w/90 in the tranny, and final drive. I do use the Delvac in the 2005 Cub Cadet transmission.....but being a hydrostatic, makes it a different animal. The oil gets changed once a year, and so far, has been trouble free. (as stated before, 1,200 hours on the clock)

I have just started using Valvoline 20W50 motorcycle oil from Wally world in my JCL MP250A. $4/quart. Not synthetic.
They also sell a synthetic Valvoline 20W50 motorcycle oil for $8.5/quart.

Or.....if you get to a NAPA Store by Aug 31st, you can buy NAPA 15w/50 Synthetic (which is Valvoline), for $2.99 a quart.

For the first few years with the CF Moto Fashion I was using Mobil 1 0W-40 because the thought was I would decrease the wear. After I found the screen filter slightly clogged with gasket bits I put in Pennzoil 10W-40 to dump after 100 miles to see if more gook showed up. Right away the scooter ran mysteriously better and Pennzoil claims to have additives that clean the engine. Since the oil gets changed every 1,000 miles I'll stick with Dino oil. The scooter is already seven years old, doesn't burn oil, has nearly 16,000 miles and is Chinese. I don't think running synthetic will make it last that much higher into the mileage levels. Plus Family Dollar puts Pennzoil on sale much of the time for under $4.00 a quart.

rks.
Thanks for the heads up. That is a really good deal. I had fully intended to get over there before the end of August and get some. Unfortunately life got in the way.
If you see something comparable in the future I sure would appreciate another heads up.
