hi all
I need help urgently please.
I have a Jonway 250 master scooter. The fan was not coming on, so I replaced the thermostat / fan switch on the radiator. The connectors from the new switch didi not match the ones on the wiring harness, so I had to crimp them with new connectors.
As soon as the bike starts to run for a couple of minutes, the temp guage goes completely into the red and the engine cuts out. I can then restart the bike untill the temp hits red again and the motor cuts out.
Please help, not sure what to do???

Welcome to Scooter Doc. Was there any difference after you replaced the switch? Does the fan come on now? If the fan is Ok and is still not coming on, then you are probably not getting any coolant circulation. I believe this is a CfMoto clone 244cc. The heat sensor is on the head for the temp guage. What you replaced was the relay for the cooling fan. As far as I know these engines do not have a overheat circuit which automatically shuts off the engine. Make sure the radiator is full including at least half way in the overflow tank. If that's OK, then you could have a water pump failure. You should feel the bottom radiator hose getting warm as the engine is running. If not, then no circulation.

I will check all of that out.
The scooter is also the YY250T, but here in South Africa it is known as the Jonway Master.

Hello "vuilbaard" (dirtbeard in Afrikaans) where in SA are you from? The fact that the heat gauge is presumably on cold then goes to red after a couple of minutes, indicates that there is water in the system but as Cruiser said maybe not enough. How old is your Jonway (km's done) Something that puzzles me, before you replaced the thermo switch, did the engine overheated as well?

Hi I live in Hartebeespoort, but work in Midrand so I commute on my scooter every day approx. 100km. Is the complete and unabridged tale of woe..... My scoot has 13 500 km on the clock and is a 2008 model. The bike was running fine and then started to have the tendecy to overheat. The coolant did not boil, but the guage was far higher than it usually is and I had to top up the coolant level often. The guage usually sits just below the halfway mark, but now spent a lot of time above the 3/4 mark. If I kept to 100 km/ph it would run nice and cool, anything above or below that and it would start to heat up. I noticed that the fan was not starting, so I replaced the fan switch that sits in the radiator. Now the guage rockets to red and the engine cuts out after a few km. When the bike has cooled down, I can restart it and ride again until it cuts out again. The coolant itself does not seem to be getting warm, and is not boiling, and I suspect that I might have interupted the power supply to the water pump when I fitted the new switch. I have no wiring diagram to comfirm this against though. I got the replacement switch directly from Jonway, but the connectors were different from the old switch, so I had to crimp the wires directly. I think this is where the proverbial goods hit the fan. So to speak Any ideas, does anybody have a wiring diagram so that I can check the connections? ?

The water pump is mechanical. Does the cooling fan work now that the switch is replaced? You said that you had to keep adding coolant. Is it leaking? Is the oil level correct? I'm wondering about the need to add coolant. High oil levels could be coolant leaking in. Also coolant could be blowing out the overflow. Both of these problems would indicate a blown head gasket. Sounds like coolant is not circulating which could just be air bound because of your frequent need to aid coolant. I think your problem might be related to the need to add coolant periodically.

Ah, Ok I am back . took a bit longer than a weekend. After all has been checked, I discoverd the problem. Me. I managed to incorrectly rewire the thermostat switch, causing the temp guage to hit red and cut out. This is why the motor was not actually heating up. But wait, there is more. As I speak, the bike is at the workshops, because three days after fixing the electrical problem, the crank went bust on me!!!!!!!. I personally don't understand it. I don't ride the bike hard, it only has 13 800 km's on the clock, and I am the only one who rides it. Granted, I ride about 100 km's per day, but still, for the big end bearing to fail to such an extent that I now need to replace: crank piston rings conrod seals Talk about a run of bad luck. Has anybody else experienced such a catastrophic failure??? Anyway, should get it back by the end of the week.

"Jammer ou maat, beter geluk volgende keer. Hopelik sal hy nou reg wees." Sorry to hear about your woes. Hope it will be fixed and you will be up and away. I must say I take my hat off to you riding where you do. I lived in Pretoria and worked in Sandton for a number of years. kiwiscoot

Well here is the update.
Still waiting for the scooter to come back from repairs. A new crank was installed, but scoot was way down on power, so they started over. Apparently the first crank was faulty.
Am riding on a 180cc Bajaj Avenger as a courtesy bike in the meantime. Not a bad bike, but accelleration is a heck of a lot less that the 250 scooter. Light on fuel though...........

Robert - why don't you sign up and activate an account. That way you get access to the tech section. I don't ride a Jonway but a lot of folks do and would be glad to comment. Which model are you considering - the YY250T?

Hi Robert. By all means, please join our forum and take advantage of our members and our knowledge base on this scooter and others. In the mean time, you might want to check out the following site on the Zscooter aka YY250T Jonway. chinesescoots.forumwise.com/chinesescoots-thread6170.html17 pages dedicated to this model. Mainly owner observations. Once you decide on a scoot, Scooter Doc is here for you. ;D
