Bashan, JR, Alleyoop, Hi, My first post. I’ve been lurking a long time and more recently a member. This is a great forum and you all have a great wealth of knowledge. I have a few questions of the generic variety. From reading thru the more recent postings it seems that the Chinese GY6 scoots have become far less troublesome than they had been or have the people learned not to ask the same questions over and over again and do some research on existing data? What is happening with Taotao? I have noticed recently that the Taotao Evo 50cc scooter has had a serious price increase. I see also that it is built on a larger than normal 50cc chassis. At this point the Taotao Evo 50cc and the Lancer 150cc are nearly equal in price. Which is the better buy? Does the recent Evo price hike indicate that it is a better made machine than the others? gjdinisn

Personally, I believe the quality of MOST Chinese scoots has improved. Another personal opinion, if the 150 and the 50 are that similar in price, I would get the 150. But I also have y MC endorsement..

I agree,, later built ( most recent) models are indeed better,,, not to be snotty about it but it had to happen,,, better materials and general overall build quality is way better than even 3 years ago,,, I would suggest the lancer at this time

greginisn The Lancer was my first choice but since I don't currently have an MC endorsement or any great plans for hwy riding, just to the local grocer or Walmart. A scooter that flys below the police radar but maybe with a 72cc kit to maintain 35 mph would be adequate for my purposes? Thanks for your replies. Greg

Greg, Since iu do not possess nor apparently have the desire to obtain the MC endorsement than a fifty cc is perfect for you at this time. When you get it, drive it as is for. awhile til you are used to it, and until the bugs ( if any are present ) are found. Then, upgrade. Just my opinion.

greginisn 2t, I rode motorcycles for some 20 years prior to moving here and have ridden thousands of miles, highway, city, small town and cross country miles. I never had a wreck and never had an occasion to do any maneuvers that in any way resembled what is expected of riders seeking an MC endorsement. I haven't ridden in years, other than bicycles, and I don't know if I still have the skills necessary to pass those tests. With the 50cc I can relearn to ride the 2 wheelers and If I can't pass the MC skills tests I'll still be able to ride the 50 cc scoot and I won't have a 150 cc scoot sitting in the garage gathering dust. So I do have valid reasons for thinking 50 cc's. Thanks for your input tho . . . Greg

Here in Wisconsin you would need motorcycle license for a 50cc. A "moped" must have 49cc or less. Probably why most dealers/owners refer to there 150cc scooters as "mopeds".

Greg, I meant no disrespect. It's come to my attention recently that I have been a duck. So ,apologies where they are due. I rode for ever without the M endorsement, but the day after I finally got it ( as an example to my oldest son..) I was pulled over...grrr Most 50cc scootrs say 49cc on the paperwork just to obide by the law and to remain under the radar. Remembr the " secret 60's "? The 50cc have several benefits over bigger scoots, but they do have their drawbacks. With the purchase of any vehicle there will be pros an cons. If it seemed like I was being rude, I do sincerely apologize.

2T'd
No problem and no offense taken. I realize that a 50cc scoot can be soonly outgrown but with my limited needs and no real justification to own one of any kind, maybe we can think of this as the camel's nose under the tent? 😇

It all depends on the state. I know that there are a few 50cc and 150cc that are almost identical. In their cases I know of some who carefully remove the 150 leters and replace with 50cc decals or raised letters which are readily available. As long as you keep speeds in the 50 range and the law is lenient you might be ok. BUT DON'T BLAME ME IF........

Jct,
I don't think I'd want to change the labeling other than maybe removing it, but a 47mm bore bbk is not out of the question. just enough to keep up in small town traffic. No highway stuff.
Thanks, Greg

If there's not a ton of scooters in a given area cops really don't know a ton about them and most don't realize they build scoots above 50... My sherriffs office had to inspect both of my 250 scoots before tagging an dnone of them realized that scooters could be bigger than 5-100cc..
