Exactly that, why? and can other materials be used? Also, could missing one of the cylinder bolt guide pins cause enough problems to cause a leak? I am talking about the little sleeves that fit over the bolts and into the slots in the head and cylinder to guide the bolts.

The head gasket is exposed to the full pressure of the combustion cycle so is has to be a stout material. As far as the guide pins go they are there to ensure the precise alinement of the cylinder, head, and rocker arms. I would think that if there was a missing one it could cause oil leaks and other problems.

What jhbietz said.
If you're missing one of the guide pins, that can easily cause a leak. I've got those guide pins in stock if you need one. Send me a PM or call me (phone number's on the website in my signature) and I can get one out to you.

Thanks guys, and Mike, I actualy found the ones I saved but couldn't find from my old top end. Gonna pull it all off this weekend and re-mount it. And see if the 161QMK top end from runninglsow will fit without me boring the cases.

I don't know where he got it but a "friend" sent me a fiber head gasket with copper rings around the cylinder and the cam tunnel. According to him it's good for about 180 psi of compression. Plus it won't flake off teflon like the stock metal head gasket if I ever have to take it apart.

That's cool! A copper head gasket if it were available would be good on a performance engine.

I have to admit that I haven't had any problems with the cheap head gaskets. My wife's scooter has two, one on top of the other. I coated each with Copper Coat and so far so good. When I put the big bore kit on it I didn't like the head that came with it. So I used the original head with 2 gaskets to keep the compression down.
