Hello All, Almost riding season here in Wisconsin, I hope! LOL!! Well, here is my question. I have a 2010, 50cc Renegade I ordered from Green Earth Scooters. I ordered it in September, a PDI was done and I ran it after that about 20 minutes before it sat all Winter inside. Well, now I can get the scooter to start but then it will cut off in less then a minute or when I rev it. I tried the idle screw, checked the battery, and all the hoses. I am hoping it is not a carb problem. The scooter only has about 4 miles, could it be a carb problem/fuel problem already? I should have drained the gas or added sea-foam but I did not. Any suggestions? Thanks Tonya Attachments:

You didn't drain the fuel ...now your carb needs cleaning...
The carb should be soaked overnight in carb cleaner and a wire from a twist tie run through the jets...
When gas sits the solids come out of solution and make a sticky varnish. Things like Sta-bil may work in some situations... and while it may slow oxidation it doesn't prevent it completely...The jets on scooters are very fine and they plug easily.
Seafoam does not work for this application, contrary to what people may say.

Yes it is your carb, you let the gas in there and never started it during the winter. You now have to take the carb off and clean out the Pilot Jet and passges. I always use 1oz of seafoam per gallon all year long and in the winter I start it once a week or every other week and let it run for about 15 minutes to get the fuel flowing thrugh the system as well as getting the oil hot and splashing and lubrciating the parts.
It has been three years now and I have yet had to clean the carb, cranks right up every time. Alleyoop

I agree with Sprocket. Always good to start the bike every other week or so for about 10 minutes to move things around and the gas won't turn to varnish.

Thanks for the video and the advice! I am such a visual person, especially when it comes to things like this. Well, I may have to wait until Saturday to start this project. I guess I am at that time when my Cricket Broadband slows way down. I guess I went over my usage allotment, so I can't play videos right now but I will let you all know how it goes! :-)

Hey Guys & Gals! I just wanted to let you all know that I got the carburetor off! Go me! I was really nervous about taking on this project but it seems to be going well. I am wondering if anyone can recommend a really good carburetor cleaner? I know I have to soak the jets, I think overnight is that correct? Well thanks a bunch all. Tonya

Soak the jets and run a wire from a twist tie (very fine wire) through the jets and scrape the inside... Somebody told me that fine beading wire works well...also the high E string from a guitar How about vinegar? ( I hear that good old Coke works too) www.ehow.com/how_4827364_use-vinegar-as-carburetor-cleaner.htmlThere are lots of commercial nasty things too. Seafoam carb cleaner, STP injector/carb cleaner, Gunk makes one...B-12 Chemtool Some are liquid some are sprays All do the same job...

Don't spend a fortune on carb cleaner, get the 1.99 an from AutoZone all that stuff is pretty potent and will do the job well.
Make sure you spray in a vented area, as it could make you light headed.

Hey all, I forgot to mention, I did strip one of the three screws while trying to remove it from the carb cover. I hope the screw is not hard to find. It was suggested to me to tap the screw a few times before trying to unscrew it but that did not work. I guess with it being a new scooter, maybe they put something on the screws to make them extra hard to remove?
Does anyone have any suggestions as how to NOT strip screws? I did not use a power drill.
Well, thanks in advance everyone!

Sometimes stripping the head of these Phillips screws cannot be avoided, Tonya. Three things have to be right to remove these screws: 1. the proper size screw driver with a good head 2. enough torque to turn the screw, and 3. enough pressure to keep the screw driver from riding up and stripping the head of the screw. If the screw is too tight, like on these carburetors, then stripping is hard to avoid. Cutting a slot across the head of the screw with a dremel tool will sometimes allow the use of a regular screw driver to remove the screw.
I was successful in removing my carb screws because I had removed the carb and put it in a vise. I then used a square shank Phillips screw driver and a pair of vise grips to turn the screw driver while I leaned in with all my weight. The screws actually made a cracking sound when they broke loose.

Yes, those screws have a thread glue like loctite on them. I use a pair of needle nose visegrips and grab the screw by the side to turn it. Once you break the seal use a screw driver...
