Hey Guys & Gals, Still not had a chance to finish the carb job. It was hard as heck to find that darn carb cover screw I stripped. I found it at Ace Hardware. The head is a little bigger, so I am hoping for the best. All I need to do is now put the jets back in and reinstall the carb. I am hoping everything goes ok. I hope to have this done tomorrow. Hello All, Well my assistant and I got the scooter back together after the card cleaning. I am positive everything was put together right but it still will not start. It is turning over but seems like it is still not getting gas. Now What? Any suggestions? Bummer!! Thanks Tonya

The Air/Fuel Mixture Screw did you turn it out 2 1/2 turn out? That is usually a good starting point for them to start. Do you smell gas or nothing? Did you test to see if you are getting Spark at the Spark Plug? You could try squirting a little bit of gas down the intake, take the VACUMM HOSE off the intake and squirt a little bit of gas straight down the Intake and put the Hose back on. It should at least attempt to fire if your getting Spark from the Spark Plug. It may not keep running but if it attempts to fire then you know for sure it is not getting gas. Lefty

Hi Lefty, Thanks for your suggestions. I do smell gas and the scooter does not attempt to start, it just cranks. I looked for the mixture screw before and I don't think that my model has one. I have to read up on how to check the spark plug. Again, thanks for the advice. I am going to take a break and try doing something with it a little later.

Wow! For some reason I got it in my head that the air/fuel ratio screw and the idle mixture adjust screw were to different screws! Duh me!!! I was hoping to work on it again last night, but I did not get to it. Before the carb cleaning it would start. After awhile, it would still start run a bit, then cut off if I tried to idle it, then it got worst and would only run a minute or two then turn off. Right before I cleaned the carb, it would just crank and not start. Now, it is doing the exact same thing now (after the carb cleaning), cranking but not starting. This scooter has only about 5 miles on it. I did a PDI on it and I only rode it a few miles before parking it for the winter with a bit of gas in it. I always had trouble with this scooter keeping a charge. I did a bit of reading last night and I now know how to check the spark plug for a charge. Everyone tells me that this model is a great little scooter. I am hoping to get it going. I sincerely appreciate all you guys help. Thanks so much. Tonya

Did you run a fine wire through the jets? Soaking them in carb cleaner is often not good enough. You must physically clean them...

Hi,
No, I did not clean the jets, just soaked them. I am wondering if you guys use anything besides guitar wire? Just wondering would Walmart or Ace have something similar I could use instead?Maybe I will redo the carb tomorrow. I soaked the jets a few days and thought that would do.

I usually just blast them out with carb cleaner and look thru them to see if they are clear. If they dont clear with just the spray I use one of these www.z1enterprises.com/detail.aspx?ID=236Its better to have a wire the right size than to just use any wire that ya think might work. Otherwize you can make the jet bigger by forcing a wire too large thru it. I can only think of one time I needed to wire a jet and it was a set of carbs off a bike that sat for over 10 yrs and I ended up just buying new jets anyway. As for jets clogging I would check and see what may have caused it especially with a new scoot. If it never had fuel in it before it could easily be the crap fuel lines breaking down and clogging things up. Its a big culprit in the clogging of carbs. Many change the fuel filter and clean the carb but dont even think of changing the fuel lines or vaccum lines.

I use a welder's long wire tip set.. many more wires, I think mine has 22 gauges... and costs about $15.
On the fuel lines.. the 'new' 2008s still have crappy fuel lines but some of the newer scooters have certified fuel lines... mine were DOT/SAE certified...on a 2010.

Someone told me that the fine stiff wire used for beading... works well
or
the wire from inside a plastic twist tie...like on a Kitchen Catcher garbage bag. You need to remove the paper or plastic from the twist tie, then use the wire

Well, the main reason I dont use random wires on jet is because its too easy to scar the inside of the jet or to make it larger if the wires too big. I usually just soak them in carb cleaner and occasionally blast them out with carb cleaner until they are clear.
If the jets totally clogged and you plan to use a wire on it just make sure the wire is quite a bit smaller than the jet and just use it to push thru the blockage and then clear the rest of it out with a carb cleaner blast. I wouldnt use a bread bag tie though. You can pick up wire from harbor freight or about any hardware store. I cant remember what the real name of it is but we used to call it bailing wire. It comes in different sizes. It should be stiff enough and shouldnt break off in the jet.

Hello Again,
Well, both me and my helper re-checked and cleaned the carb again but the scoot still will not start. I charged the battery, check the spark plug, (spark plug a little dirty but looked ok) put a different battery in just to see if it would start, no luck.
As before it still cranks really strong but will not attempt to start. All the hoses look great. This is a 2010 model. Not sure what to do next. This scooter really never held a charge, any other suggestions?
Also just heard some great news! Here in Wisconsin, we can now use a scooter in the basic riding class and still get a motorcycle endorsement. It is new, so if anyone from Wisconsin has any information, I'd love to hear from you. I called Ride-Alive here in Milwaukee and was told the happy news. I myself never had must interest in learning to ride a motorcycle so I am very excited. Ride-Alive does not have any scooters in their fleet yet so if you want to take the class, you'll have to bring your own scooter, at least for now.

Ok, if you smell gas your getting gas, so if it does not fire then that means the Spark Plug is not fireing.
Take the Spark Plug out and and put it back in the Boot Cap and Hold the Spark Plug in the Boot against the Engine and Crank it. You should see a nice blue spark sparking. You might want to get a new Spark Plug they sometimes come with some really cheap Spark Plugs that go bad really quick. Lefty
