I'm doing a bbk upgrade and the set of rings I got have no marks on them at all. one is a copper color one is black and the oil ring set. Now I have installed many sets of rings on various types of engines. So I know that rings have a beveled edge and they must be installed with the bevel in the right direction. They are usually marked on the side that goes up. I'm guessing the copper colored one is the top ring. As I look at the edge of the rings I can't determine which way the bevel goes.

With 35 years experience with pistons and rings I say the bevel goes up.

Yes robb you are correct the bevel goes up. but my problem is when I look at the edge of the rings I can't see the bevel. I even used a very large 8x magnifying lens.

Combustion gasses will always get behind the top ring bevel or not. If the second has no bevel then it will be a sort of low tension ring probably doing more for oil controll than anything else. I wouldn't let the lack of a bevel keep me from installing them. They may have some reason for not having a bevel, inscrutable to westerners.

Some GY6 rings don't have any bevel at all... Some GY6 rings have the bevel on the bottom edge of the rings, & some Herve a bevel on both top & bottom... Some GY6 rings have no marks indicating top or 1st or 2nd ring... If there's no indicators I wouldn't worry about up or down, if one ring is chrome or silver or color I'd use it as 1st ring... & of coarse set gap acordingly...

And hone the cylinder walls. I just met a guy that did a complete engine rebuild and he didn't use a hone... ugh
I guess he will get a second chance in about 3000 miles...

If it's a new bore kit, shouldn't need honing... You only need to hone used cylinders to get rid of the glazing & for seating new rings in use bore...

Hey guy's thanks for the input. This is a new jug so I don't need to hone the cylinder. Whenever I do a ring job I always hone the cylinder to break the glaze and put cross hatch pattern on the cylinder walls. This helps new rings seat properly.
