A gallon or two is not that much. A slow fill would help stop the back splash.
I must do a slow fill on my car. If I pull the handle way up there is enough confusion in the tube to cause the pump to shut off. Now I must keep the handle in a slower position to keep the flow going. Different but similar problem.
Rate of fill. .

there are large sized needle nosed pliers made. they are found at harbor freight and other chinese tool stores. they have the reach to go down and start the twisting back and forth. I left mine in cause it takes so little gas and is full before you know it but if it bothers you don't complain...do some thing about it! john

It is called a SPLASH GUARD and is there for a reason and that is what it does. It stops the gas from coming up to the Cap and coming out when your riding hitting bumps and what not. So you should leave it in there and just bend one end down so when you put the Pump noozle in there you point it towards the DOWN bent section and it also will act as a little slide for the gas to flow in. BTW, my Honda has the same thing. The Chinese got it from the Japanese, so blame them.
