I'm new to the 250 scooters and picked up a mc-54-250b for a great price. I thought it needed an exhaust gasket because it sounded like it had a leak at the head, so i made one out of a metal manifold gasket. It is a little narrower inside the pipe but matches out side, anyway I installed it and I still have the same VW bug sound, any ideas on what would cause this?

Welcome to Scooter Doc, deanc. Which motor does your scoot have, the Linhai (horizontal cylinder) or the Helix (vertical cylinder)?

linhai, i fixed the exhaust gasket so part of the sound is gone now is a knocking coming from under the cvt cover at the back wheel, i took the cover off but I dont see anything that looks broken.

Deanc, When you had the cover off and ran the engine, was it making the same noise? I can tell you from my many experiences with the CVT cover, every time I thought it was coming from the clutch, it was actually coming from the variator.
I would suggest you remove the clutch bell and clutch and check inside there, could be a broken shoe, and check all of your rollers. If one turns and it can it makes a terrible sound plus loss of power. I do hate removing 12 bolts.

Remove the variator. Start the engine. If the sound is gone, then it has to be coming from the clutch.

Well if the Belt is sitting HALF WAY DOWN in the Clutch Pulley and all the way down in the Variator Pulley, the problem is with the CLUTCH. Probably the Contra Spring is broke. Alleyoop

cruiser did you mean remove the belt? so if the noise is still there its the variator? Thanks alley pop i'll take it apart and check the spring. The problem with just removing the belt is that the weights will come out of their respective tracks and then you will have to take the variator off anyway to reset the weights. Removing the variator for this test will make sure there is no noise coming from the variator.

how do i remove clutch without an impact wrench? Bungee cord or tie down the rear brake handle to prevent the rear wheel from turning. Then you can use a socket wrench or breaker bar and slide a long pipe over the end of the wrench for more leverage. If the wheel turns, then you need more pressure on the brake lever.

can i stick a pipe through the whell and let the shock hold the wheel too? This would NOT be the preferred method unless you are wanting to buy a new WHEEL. You could easily bend or crack the wheel doing this.

i rented an impact i kinda thought i was about to bend shocks wheel ect. everything is back thogether and fine except the rollers although good there are 8 not 6 so when i bought some and went to put the in I found I was short 2. thankfully the ones i had were good. valves adjustedx, still rattles in final drive box but the wheel bearing feels tight. next i have to figure out why it bogs even after a valve job.
