as I recall wasn't the gy6 originally a 110cc engine? anyway asking that engine to run WOT for a sustained period in 60mph traffic is insane. a remake scaling a gy6 to 200cc with a crank, engine case, cyl., and all the rest scaled up in my opinion would make a much more reliable 55mph scooter. the problem is that where they sell the most (in asia) the gy6 as is and stock works just fine for them.

Guess i have to jump on here to clarify some things
first and foremost
CHINESE SCOOTERS ARE JUNK, this is from expereince they are not quality, they are not dependable, they are not durable, and i daresay that the parts for them are just as bad if not WORSE then the parts already on them, they come with cheap support, hardly any warranty, and are best suited for around town at best 30 mile rides at a time.
This is not to say that the chinese scoots dont please some people who pretend to turn a blind eye to the glaring defects they are inherent with (i myself made this mistake)
When this trip is over i will be writing a very comprehensive and GLARING review of said scooter
for those of you who so quickly chimed in with cracks like "i could see it all along" and " i knew this would happen" YOU WERE NOT THERE, IT DIDNT HAPPEN TO YOU, YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOUR TALKING ABOUT, AND TALKING LIKE YOU DO MAKES YOU SEEM LIKE A BIGGER FOOL THEN I WAS FOR TRYING THIS TRIP!
with that said the scoot died because a faulty gasket was shipped with the engine, 2100 miles down highway or 50 miles back home it was a time bomb waiting to happen, case closed
as for the cop issue, i was within my rights to take the ticket (which has now been cleared btw) and continue on, i am fully insured thanks for that
speeds? i think the scooter is perfectly capable of the speeds we told you about, and the engine stayed at good temp levels (see report once trip is over)
I have been offered 2 book deals (premature) and a possibly movie of my trip so far.
My sponsors did the best they could remember they are buying the same chinese "JUNK" as we are so why are we any better,
truth is ill finish this trip and win my bet, and i have learned a lot on this journey, keeping the site updated is a lot harder then it may seem for those of you who are not happy with the blogs and photos you dont have to continue reading,
I try to understand that most of you write these things from the comfort of your easy chair in a warm home while it is I thats out here sitting roadside putting fuel in, dissasembling engine parts in the breakdown lane, freezing in sub zero wind chills, i really want to have sympathy for the "knowledge" that you all have so much of when it is ME that is really aquiring this knowledge
ALas im all done for now the bet is still on the blog is still being updated and i sit here before i leave for yet another wonderful location in sunny florida
Im less then 500 miles from the keys

WOW. VERY disappointing attitude.
Fact 1. You got exactly what you paid for. CHEAP transportation.
Fact 2. You modified said CHEAP transportation with even CHEAPER parts. And were rewarded for your tinkering accordingly.
Fact 3. Only a fool believes ANY production manufactured, internal combustion engine is intended to run at full throttle for hours on end. A Ferrari would have blown up if held at full throttle that many hours.
Fact 4. Jay has just proven beyond ANY doubt what a few of you said looong ago. "a journey as such this is probably not any benefit to the scooter community." Or anyone for that matter.
Sorry Jay, but again. WOW. What a total disappointment this has been turned into for everyone... Good luck.

Oh Boo Hoo. Let me put this as simply as possible for you Smart Guy. I'm still riding in upstate New York where it's easily as cold as Maine. You blew that engine all by yourself. No defective gasket. You fried the piston, scorched the cylinder and the blow by, sorry that's too big a term for you, the hot air created by combustion flowing past the piston, blowing out the base gasket. In your hubris you decided what scooter to buy. If you had come here first we could have told you about Baja's terrible reputation. I sent you a message before your trip that you made too many changes to trust on a long trip without testing them first. Reap the rewards for your lack of knowledge Jason.
You think we weren't there?? We've watched you on Google Maps and tracked your speeds. 58 mph for hours on end. Too damn fast for any air cooled 150. Try your foolishness on a Vespa LX 150 and the results would be the same.
I have been offered 2 book deals (premature) and a possibly movie of my trip so far.
You know who might read or watch your adventure? The same people who call our scooters junk. Certainly not me. Of course conspiracy theorists might even say they put you up to it. Afterall what better way to prove their point than with somebody who has no business owning something that requires common sense usage. Somthing you severely lack.
If I had the time, money and no family I could replicate your trip-EASILY-on my 6,000 miles old 150cc Chinese scooter. Of course I'd stay off the Connecticut Tpke., Merritt Pkwy. and Garden State Pkwy. I know better. I'm a Long Islander pal, I know the region.
Oh, by the way, your misfire is being caused by a vacuum leak in either a misplaced vacuum line or bad intake manifold. If I was there I'd find it for you in all of thirty seconds.
You aren't just a bad scooter owner, you're a bad person. Karma, Wise Guy, is stepping on your face.

Jay, one more time about the law, if you got a ticket for no motorcycle endorsement on your drivers license, then unless you got that fixed and took the test since you got your ticket, YOU HAVE NO INSURANCE COVERAGE. check your policy, insurance covers licensed drivers. You were never part of the scooter community starting your "Spectacular Journey" on a 150cc with no drivers license! just incredibly stupid out on an expressway with that scooter. I imagine your "sponsors" right now all have second thoughts and probably would not ever again sponsor a honest rider on a similar rider.

I really do not get people being uncivil and disrespectful on a forum.
I probably know more than anyone what has transpired through out this trip. The base gasket failed and the engine was run out of oil. When I say it failed a large chunk popped right out and it would not have taken very long to have no oil in the crankcase running at highway speeds. The top of the engine failed due to a lack of oil. I do not know of any engine that can run without oil for long,, do you? What is amazing is that this thing is still running considering nothing was done to the lower end.
I would like to point out a couple of things here.....
The catch can system would have actually handled far more volume of blow by than the stock system having two sources and the size the hoses. Did I think it was necassary? No but it was more or less harmless. Regardless, there was little blow by around the time of the failure.
The gearing on this bike was changed not by NOT a small amount. When he gave me the drive and driven gear tooth count on the new gears and I calculated the gear ratio I was alarmed. It was nearly a 30% change. My concern was that the engine would not develop enough torque to get to and maintain highway speeds. Would a 150 without those gears blow up running full out for hours at a time? No doubt in my mind. Changing the gears would have been a reasonable thought for anyone making a trip like this... It would have at least been an attempt at addressing the problems you guys are proposing here.
To be honest I do not get people who disregard gearing when they are trying to get more speed out of a scooter. It is simple if you have done mods to your engine yes you made the engine rev higher and you will get to a higher speed. However you have also shortened your engine life. If you have done those mods and tuned the engine correctly you have also increased torque. Why then not gear up for the higher speeds if that is what you really wanted?
I do not believe this was a fault of Jay's. Should he have been pulling over every hour to check his oil? Well yes perhaps. Would there have been less problems if he did catch this when the engine started to leak, absoloutley.
I will say this if I were doing a PDI on a cheap chinese scooter I would include checking the torque on the head bolts after this little adventure.
If anything maybe this trip is a testament to the thought that if you were to take a trip as such you had better be a skilled mechanic and bring lots of tools and parts.
I have just taken 10 minutes of my life to write this and will not take any more of my time or energy to add anymore to this thread of apparent negativity.

Sorry, you say tomato, I say tomahtoe. It is a large given that it takes a good long time to seat the piston rings on a GY6. I still say he scorched them, now that I hear the gearing change, by the ridiculous loads he placed it under and constant high speed. When you say The base gasket failed. When I say it failed a large chunk popped right out
Do you as a mechanic think the Good Fairies yanked it out. With his super catch can and breathing system how did it happen? I'll tell you, excess blow-by blew it out. I popped a head gasket on mine by long running at 45 mph on a hot summer day. Don't whitewash him. Himself, a heavy load of gear (100 pounds by his reckoning) and heavy gearing and no knowledge of how things work did him in. Plus making an oil check difficult. I've been around motorcycles long enough to know the smell of a bad rider. Jason needs heavy deodorant.
Blaming the scooter for his own vast inadequacies is just a cop-out. We all know better.

Good, if you're Noah you should have been a better adviser. If anybody started this negativity it's your boy and his dumb verbal blogs. He's blamed everybody but himself for his blunders. His family, his sponsors, the manufacturer. St. Jason, of course, is just a victim.

All in all, I think he will make it. He has been thru a lot and is still plugging at it. Instead of all the negative comments lets stand behind him because he is doing it. No matter what we can say we witnessed it. Jay can say he did it! ( Sure as hell has been a spectacular Journey so far )

I just listened to Jay's latest audio blog and apparently he has the scooter repaired and is going to resume his journey. We wish Jay a safe trip free of any further mechanical difficulties. Rich

I too, listened to his latest blog. Thank you very much for declaring all of New York State an intellectual wasteland and that Vietnam Vets suffered and died in such a wasteful and senseless action. How nice that the State of Maine is such a paradise. Why ever did you leave?

Rich Great, I'd deleted all links to the atrocity, and now your making me go back for a laugh. I'll see you at your funeral for this! ;D ;D ;D Does the mention of the forum mean everyone here gets a cut of the "book deal" profits? SWEEET!
