Dude, I see you've attracted the attention of Terra Nuvo, aka Earthman. Don't let him bother you. He was singing the praises of his scooter long and hard before his exhaust pipe fell off and his "Japanese" carburetor malfunctioned on him. My Bashan has almost 6,000 miles on it and works just fine, although it and my wrenches are close friends. Earthman is like so many BMW owners I've known who tell you how their bike has been flawless and don't tell you how many hours they spend working on it behind closed garage doors making sure nothing falls off it.
Also if he does have a Xingyue he's riding a second class BMS model. The Znens they sell are much better. Over at Scoot Dawg I see Earthman has made all his usual comments, drawing on his months of experience, about how Jay could have bought a better scooter to take the trip on.

LOL so thats the deal Earthman is not there but T.N. is. I read on that site also as well as other's and for the last few weeks Ive been wondering what cloud this T.N. dropped from. Agreed with you all he has some strange outlooks, but thats what makes the world go round.

Forgive my naivety here... I see on Jay's bike he's removed the dip stick and there's an aluminum catch can in its place, and the vent hose from the rocker cover is also routed to the can... Given that the engine has a rather large tunnel for the timing chain to travel from the bottom of the crank case to the top of the head that allows all the air imaginable to circulate through the whole engine, and any possible pressure from any possible part of the crank case to vent out the factory installed vent hose on the rocker cover, I'm at a total loss on what removing the dip stick is accomplishing. Is it possible a failure of the fancy can to vent (clog) caused pressure in Jay's crank case to blow his oil seal??? And I can't help but wonder if Jay had had the factory dip stick to easily check fluid levels at each fuel fill up (seems sensible on such a trip to me), he likely would never have trashed his engine... ? Who dreamed up these "smoke and mirror" dip stick vent hose cans?!? Why wouldn't you want a dip stick to check fluid levels??? Do the people selling such products know what their promoting? Why rip people off?

The temp sensor is a REAL nice idea. Replacing the dip stick with a hose is funny at best though. Glad he made it to Florida! Just in time to miss this years snow up north.

I cannot find the pics you guys are talking about, can one of you direct me to them? I'm curious about the oil temp mod. Rich

Really the only part of the site that he's been able to keep updated on the trip. Good stuff. I fully believe it he'd just done the PDI and kept the scoot stock he'd have made the trip without issue!!! Bad advise and free JUNK from sponsors got the better of him. They nearly caused his scoot to burn to the ground before he even left home with it!!! msj.4321fun.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&id=42&Itemid=206

The biggest problem is that a 150cc Chinese scooter with small wheels (13") is not meant to be taken out on I-95 for hours at a time and run Wide Freaking Open at 60 mph. Maybe a 16" wheeled scooter might have handled it, but I doubt that too. I saw him running 60 mph numerous times and knew the outcome. Blown piston rings, scorched cylinder and oil blowing out every pore. All he had to do was ask anyone here with a 150 if the scooter would take it and we'd have told him "NO". His route was suited to a Chinese 250cc scooter but not an SC-150 Baja.

a 150 is happy when it is running 45. yea it will go faster but to go on a 45mph road you need to be able to speed up to pass etc., just not stay at 60. that trip would have been fine had he took the secondary roads and the ones that you don't have to kill the scooter on.
he is very lucky he wasn't stopped for impeding traffic and towed. he was stopped once according to the blog for no motorcycle drivers license, I believe in Maine by a state trooper. the trooper could have also hit him with a no insurance ticket too and towed it. whether he has paid for insurance or not,..... he has none.... as all insurance policys state on them "licensed drivers". a journey as such is probably not any benefit to the scooter community.

No benefit to the Chinese scooter community. Anyone riding a Taiwanese, Japanese or European scooter would probably repeat their usual line of "See. Chinese scooters are junk"
The truth is even Paul Smith (Scootin Fool Blog) took all secondary roads back and forth from PA to Massachusetts on his Kymco People 150. He knew that it wasn't highway capable. When was the last time you saw a Vespa 150 on an Interstate? For what he paid I'm sure he could have found an old Bali or Reflex replica and not flogged it so seriously.
250cc BMS Blue Scooter - $1500 (Jay, maine)

I have for sale a Blue 250cc BMS Macho-Man scooter. Specifications are as follows.
-4-stroke water cooled engine -Disk brakes -CD player / radio -Remote starter -two sets of keys -under seat storage -rear storage bin and rack -250cc engine -alarm system -two kick stands. One for functionality and one for display -can go up to 65 miles per an hour -50 miles a gallon -Spare dash / instrument cluster unit
I purchased this Scooter new straight from the Manufacturing plant in 2006. It has less then 400 miles on it. I had very little use. I have a child now and my wife no longer wishes for me to use it. It has been in storage for a year or so. Like new condition. Only problem I have it that sometimes it stalls while driving. You start it up again and its fine. I brought it to a motor shop and they told me it has a japan fuel filter on it and it needs a US fuel filter because our gasoline is different. Other then this nothing is wrong and it is flawless. It also comes with all original materials title and spare Dash unit. Please contact me and I will send pictures to who ever is interested.
I'm sure this guy could be knocked down a couple of hundred and only be $300 more than Jay paid for the Baja.

If the speed limit is 55+... You'd BETTER be cruising at around 75+ or your a highway hamburger waiting to happen.

So the final outcome of all of this is a 150 will not run highway speeds no matter what? Disagree here it can be made to run but not stock. Most folks just dont have the know how to do it so it doesnt happen. We all have seen the video of the 150 modified and doing 80, of course there has to be something in front of it to break the wind.

First, anything can be made to run faster, but for how long? Jay allegedly installed lower gearing but still belched the motor. You have the advantage of 14" wheels which help considerably but still doesn't make for 250cc speed and torque. I know someone who has a well worked 13" wheeled scooter. Porting, carb work, a Prodigy variator and 13 gram sliders and he reported having it up to 63 mph GPS. Of course he's a 250 pound guy so your speed might vary. Yes, a good big bore kit, four valve head and higher compression would help but what else would burn up. Lower end bearings? Plus,by the time you go through that expense there are 250s out there for $1000 or less. I can cite three nearby, two Hondas and a JCL 250 I could buy for under a grand. Down by my parents on Long Island sits a 2001 Reflex for $875 with a blown belt. The point is a Honda SH 150i might be capable of 70 mph, flat out and last all day, but this was a China scoot bet. The sure way to win it would have been a 250 China scoot off Craigslist or Killer Motor Sports, not a hot rodded hand grenade 150.
