Hey All,

Let the fun begin. Any help would really be appreciated.

I'm a newbie to scooters. I bought a 2006 250cc Tank Urban Touring and love it. It reads around 5000 miles (if accurate). Until recently a few problems like th speed-o-cable broke and the fuel level sending unit went out but otherwise a good scooter. On the last trip, the scooter stalled and would not restart. It seems to be a vac or coolant line on the carb that came off, but I'm not sure which. You can see the two fitings the line joined in the pic.

Doesn't make sense that the scooter will not even start if its just the coolant line. I put it back on the scooter and it started and ran fine. 10 miles or so later the scooter stalled again. It was the same line that had come off.

Would anyone know what specific motor is in this scooter? I find a lot of manuals for 250cc motors but I'm not sure which is correct or what motor to buy parts for.

Are the two fittings in the pic part of the cooling system or vac system? After checking I noticed the radiator line to the overflow tank was kinked in two places. Would this cause the line to blow off the carb or something else?

I found the engine does not have a thermostat in the housing. It never ran hot the way it is (unless that is what caused this problem). Does this motor need the thermostat to run correctly?

There is a line on a fitting at the bottom of the carb, by the drain screw that is not connected to anything else. Is this for draining purposes or does it need to be connected to something?

Any explanation of the lines on the carb would be a really big help.

Welcome to the forum.....first off...if the cylinder is horizontal it is the 257cc Linai Yamaha clone....if it is a vertical cylinder it is the 244 cc Honda clone....the valves need to be adjusted...the 257...intake is .004 and the exhaust .006 ....this will cure a number of problems such as idle speed.....1700 to 2000 rpm on the china meter....the carb does not have coolant running though it ....so that does not need to be hooked up...now vaccumm lines will need to be..... engine oil needs to be 10W40....gear oil 85W90.....50/50 coolant.....Dot 3 or 4 brake fluid...valves stems changed to one piece....the rubber ones will come apart.....Dynabeads for balancing the tires....1 oz for the front....2 oz for the rear....use blue loctite on all bolt threads that will come loose....the rear axle nut also needs blue loctite....just a few things that may have been done and maybe not....a good PDI (Post delivery inspection) will also find some issues...I have 6200 miles on my scoot and it has performed great.....it is just a machine....has to be looked after and cared for...the 3 forums have a ton of info to help you with your ride.....enjoy....

I have also completed a few mods...manual choke......HID's.....H4/9003....5000k....Bi-Xenon Hi/Lo bulbs.....purchased off Ebay.....recovered seat....changed out the trunk....and a Battery Tender jr. for maintenance....

I forgot about the thermostat...yes it needs one....this controls coolant flow through the radiator and engine....

Yes, that picture shows a missing vacuum line. If it ran before and isn't now there should be a loose line flopping around in there someplace. The 2006 Tank 250s had Honda clone engines and were well liked. In 2008 they switched to the Vog style 257s and were a disaster.

Well that nipple on the left is from the cooling system, I,ve got something very similar to that on my Pegasus only it's a bypass hose around the thermostat. That larger hose connector at the bottom has a coolant hose on it during operation doesn't it? The component threaded into the left of the nipple with the wires is your coolant gauge sensor. I'm pretty sure the nipple on the left was originally designed to send coolant through the carb via the nipple that the other arrow points to, then the nipple that has the line attached is the exit. I think that system was designed more for the ATVs and they didn't use it on the scooters. Did coolant come out of that nipple when the hose fell off? Maybe it's closed off.

This is from the Linhai manual, the sides are bass ackwards but the red arrow points to where the coolant nipple sits, and the green points to the two nipples on the carb. I believe there is a lot of variation on these things from year to year, and model to model. I'm no 250 expert, this is JMO. Rich

Yes. The the larger hose connector at the bottom does have a coolant line attached. Reaching up inside that housing I can feel two holes that lead to the area where the fitting is mounted. So I'd say your right in thinking the two fittings are part of the cooling system. I'll go through all the lines again, maybe I missed a vac line that came off.

I'll be taking the steps provided by bhinch later. Some good news is that it turns out I have the well liked 244 cc Honda clone (the cylinder is vertical). Is the thermostat specific to the engine or the scooter make/model?

Does anyone know of a diagram/schematics/picture, anything that shows the vacuum line layout for this scooter or possibly a model specific shop manual? I know it's a stretch looking for something like this. I have looked all over the net, probably 3 or 4 days trying to find something.

The Honda Elite 250 and Honda Helix have the Honda 244cc engine. Maybe there's something in these manuals that will help you.

OK, I got ya figured out. Your attachment picture was so close I didn't realize it was the verticle engine. I just recently aquired a CF Moto Fashion which has the 244cc verticle engine. I got off my duff and went downstairs and took some pics. Here is looking at the right side of the carb. The short elbow tube is the bowl vent. The blue arrow points to the coolant line that runs to the carb. The other line we discussed that runs downward that you can't see in this pic is also a coolant line and exits the carb:

Here's the left side of the carb that shows the vacuum line running to the air-cut valve. If this was off you'd definately have some running problems:

That Linhai diagram is actually very similar except that the coolant comes from the left side rather than the right. Also, I am pretty sure about the fact that they dion't use that carb coolant system on the scooters and just leave those two nipples open on the horizontal engines. What perplexes me is why coolant wasn't coming out of that line when it came off of your scooter. Rich

Looking at a Tank 2006 250cc later tonight . Has 6300 miles . Worth getting if it checks out ? $750 . This is to replace my totaled ( insurance adjuster broke the news about my ) Roketa 2005 . I want abit more power than a 150cc . There is a tank 150cc at a dealership with 36miles . Not sure what to do . Any advice would be much appreciated before I leave in an hour .

Is the guy giving you a warranty with that price? Also, does it need tires? I'd also insist on riding it and make sure it's not smoking. If that's all good I'd buy it but offer him a little less, he'll take it. You could remind him that Tank is out of business and you'll have trouble finding parts. Actually, most parts are Stock Chinese and you can get them, but it gives you something to complain about. Yeah, that's a good price. Rich

WOW, that is some great information...now for a really, really dumb question...don't laugh to loud, but how do you tell which is which..i mean horizontal or vertical? Mine is a 2007 JCL 250cc. Someone told me they could tell because of the chrome piece on the exhaust...but they never did tell me. Anyway, I would guess mine to be the 244cc honda clone.

Vertical the Head is pointing Up towards the seat, Horizontal the head is pointing toward the front of the scoot. The one in the picture above is Vertical the head is pointing up.

You have the 257cc linhai and the muffler and CVT cover are different than the 244cc. You mean to say with running this amazing boric acid discovery you don't even know what engine is in your scooter?

This is all new to me and I'm just learning as I go. Thank you for the information. ;D
