Stripping paint off the plastic patrs By Gti (Read 4,657 times)

I am changing the color on my ride, and I am having some issue getting the old paint off and applying the new paint in the correct "color" that I am looking for and it is the color underneath the paint I am spraying that is having and effect on my end result.

What is the best way to get the old paint off??

sand smooth and prime first. also if you go rattle can don't over look "KRYLON" for plastic. you would not need the for plastic stuff if no plastic has been bared. different color over color is some times a big problem. if your paint is not pealing or chipping off I would just prime and paint. john

I am a big fan of sticking with one product when doing paint. I just did a rattle can job and went with Rustoleum products. I was really impressed with the results. they even an adhesion promoter if you are spraying bare plastic. Should be no need to strip the paint off. In fact you are better off not doing that as you have a sound surface to paint on now. Just clean, scuff it up a little with some 240 to 320 grit or maybe a scotchbrite pad until dull and spray. Always keep a wet edge..

i painted my fan cover, airfilter box & pipe
the fan cover, box all i did was ruff em up a bit
and primed (grey) and then painted silver. (kylon )
the pipe, i stripped to bare metal then painted
with plast-kote hi temp (1500 degrees) metallic

i just painted my bike with Dupli-Color spray cans i had some places that had tho be sanded down to bare plastic so i used some primer on those and many light coats of paint later here is the result

I know this is an old thread but this looks really good. Is the whole thing repainted or just certain sections?

i repainted the whole bike but not the wheels i have sence change the with a spare set that i painted siliver like the rack on the back and the v shape piece of trim on front

That looks killer. I wish I could do something like that but I think the wheel color is holding me back. I would like a chrome or polished set instead of blue. Blue doesn't go with much.

I'll be getting new panels soon for my scoot (not the color I want, they are silver) but they are new, so do I need to sand or put primer on these panels before painting? I'm not totally sure what color I want, right now they are blue, what would go with blue so I won't have to paint my wheels

I'll have to check those out, thanks for the heads up. Do you have any tips on how to change them out besides taking them to a shop?

I just looked at them. I really like them, but they say they are for rear disc. I don't have rear disc.

you will need to sand the shine off with 400 to 600 grit wet/dry paper with lots of water and a little dish soap to keep the paper from glogging up

! Few of the motorcycle shops I visited wanted to charge an arm and a leg, though I haven't tried the scooter shop yet though. I did find some videos here that show how to change a tire but I haven't watched them yet.

I'm not familiar enough with the scooter systems yet to figure out if those wheels would work, I just go by description. How hard and expensive was it to convert to disc rear?

I got to looking around ebay and all I could find so far was wheels that look like mine with rear drum.

I just may have to do that, thanks for all the info. I have to say, upgrading the scooter seems a lot easier and cheaper then upgrading my car, lol.
