Just bought a new battery for my sons bike but it didnt take long to run it down flat. When i recharged it, it dropped down from 13.5v to 12.7v in 24Hours. Also, when the bike in running, the voltage only goes up to 12.35v after starting.

If you bring up the RPMS do the Voltage go up or stay low at 12.35? If so then I think you need a new Regulator/Rectifier that is the part that charges the battery. Alleyoop They looke like this just make sure you get one that matchs the wireing on yours: There are all kinds with different number of plug wires 4 plug,5 plug,6 plug,7 plug etc..

I agree that your voltage should be higher than that when charging. Also, if your battery dropped that much in 24 hours you bought a bad battery or there's a big drain like a faulty security system. Do you have something on the bike like that? Rich

I have checked the voltage when revving the bike and the voltage peaks around 14v which i find ok. The probl;em is that when the lights are on high beam, the voltage goes down to below 12v and this is causing the battery to drain quickly

My scooter did this from new... changed out all the dash bulbs for LEDs and the running lights and now it charges fine with the headlights on...

COOL!! if the voltage goes up to 14.? when rpms goes up that is good that means your Regulator/Rectifier is working. The problem is the headlights they could be of high Wattage like 55w which draw a lot of juice. Also a bad ground by your headlights as well. If bulbs are of high watts change them out for lower watt bulbs and changeing all of the other lights to LEDS will help a lot. Alleyoop

Some people also put a switch on one of the headlights... so they can turn it off during the day and then on at dusk.
I have seen a number of motorcycles that are like that, one light is low beam and the other high beam.. the high beam is shut off during the daytime...

Thanks for the help. Will look at the lighting and changing to LED's. Also i will check the grounding. The bulbs are 2 x 35w so i will also look at other possibilities and thanks again for the help and advice

I have seen a number of motorcycles that are like that, one light is low beam and the other high beam.. the high beam is shut off during the daytime... Im not sure what the laws are in your state, but here in the sun shine state, it is mandatory for any type of street legal motor bike to ALWAYS have the running lights on ( a running brake light and a running head light on low beam ) if the bears see ya without one on they will pull ya over not fun. i had a charging issue similar and alley walked me through what i should look for. at the time i hadnt touched a scooted although im an 8 year mechanic ( diesel and automotive ) but never have i messed with a small, fragile, bike like vehicle. i was afraid to break it worse so i consulted with alley and a few others who were experts on these things and they helped me, which was just a bad ground. like alley said, the china men are great at painting. so i had to dremmel down the ground and add a new ground to the valve cover.

The law in the UK doesn't force bikes to use lights in the daytime but most bikers with sense have them on all the time and i insist that my son does it too
