First time scooter owner and already having problems. I have a 2010 cy50 taotao milano with 1000 miles. It'll fire right up and run, but after stopping for any reason, will not start again. If it sits for an hour, it'll usually fire back up. Gas was dripping from the air cleaner housing last time this happened. Spark plug is wet. I picked this thing up for $500 and now I'm thinking I got beat on the deal. Can anyone help? I tried to do a search for answers, but I didn't see what I was looking for.

Does not sound like a big problem at all, from what you are saying it is being flooded after you shut if off. The reason is starts after sitting for a while is the gas evaporates and dries off the plug. That points to two possible problems: 1. Your Petcock is allowing fuel to flow freely and is not shutting off without Vacuum. 2. Your Carbs float plunger is not shutting off when the bowl is full and allowing fuel to still come in. So First thing is to check your Petcock, take the fuel hose off the carb and stick it in a container to catch any fuel. With the engine off NO FUEL should be coming out IF it does REPLACE the Petcock. If that is all ok it is time to take the Carb off and check if the Float is actually shutting off the fuel inlet when the bowl is full. To test that put a piece of hose on the Fuel Nipple so you can blow into it. Then hold the carb like in the picture below and push the float GENTLY and blow and see if the air stops from coming out. If not take the FLoat off and check the Shut Off Plunger they have a rubber tip on them to seal the inlet. If that is good then go ahead and adjust the Float it may be set to High and letting in To Much Fuel and overflowing the Carb Bowl. Alleyoop

Gas or oil is dripping from the air cleaner?
Sounds like you may have a float problem in the carburator.. that is often the cause of fuel leaking from the carb ventura.
You should set the valve gaps at 1000 miles.. it is often a cause of the stalling when hot as you describe.
Usually .003" gaps are fine for the 50 cc

You guys are awesome! Thank you for steering me in the right direction. Is there a good source for chinese parts? I've tried Eagle and they don't have a petcock, but there are a few on ebay right now. I'm guessing this piece is somewhere between the tank and the carb? Is it vacuum controlled?
I'm pretty mechanical, but I'll admit I don't know jack about scooters. Are the chinese-made prone to more problems?
Thank you very much for your help! Dave

chino scoots will give you a hell of alot of problems and really they do suck...if you dont take care of them. stroke them like a kitten and they will purr. be nice to kitty and it wont scratch you. oh you get the point. i have a chino and i love it, never has let me down. just have to know how to work on it and keep a close eye on it. any vehicle with a gas/diesel motor is prone to problems. routine PM services will keep you off the side of the road. as for your petcock, look at the banners at the top of each page, they are our preferred vendors. i avoid ebay as most parts for scooters are coming from china and you will be waiting a month for a petcock to come in. i would recommend scooterelements or PM tvnacman ( john ) to see if any of them have a cheap petcock. their shipment will get to you a hell of a lot faster.

oh yeah, alley is first to the punch on the carb issues. he will wake up out of a dead sleep and jump on the computer ( he has a built in carb issue detector ) to post possible fixes. he goes from 0-carb fixin in 3.2s

HAHAHA!! You guys crack me up, And Yes ChefP, if you have a Petcock(Tank Above the Carb) or a Fuel Pump(Tank Below the Carb) they are operated by Vacuum. Now some pectcocks Screw Right into the Outlet from the Tank otherwise there will be a hose from the Tank then the Petcock or a Fuel Filter Then the Petcock or the Fuel Filter can be between the Petcock and the Carb. like this: Alleyoop

Thanks again to everyone for the advice. Alley hit it - it was the carb. Now that it's cleaned/adjusted, she runs pretty good! Now...on to the fuel gauge, which always reads "E".
I'm pretty sure it is a bad float on the sensor. I can reach into the tank with a piece of bent coat hanger wire and move the float manually and the gauge works. Problem will be getting to the sensor. It looks like dang near all the body will need to be removed to drop the tank get to the bolts that hold the sensor in.

Besides a bad float they have been known to rub on the sides of tank thus hanging up.

Or the C-clip is tight and binding.. not allowing the float wire to move...
