I've been looking at a cheap variator replacement on eBay for like $26 shipped. It says 115mm, so should be about the same as what's in there. I question if spending +$100 for a Dr Pulley is worth it.
My problem is, I changed the belt over the summer and my rollers went sideways. Removing the variator without an impact I cracked a fin on the fan through to the smooth side and now it be a chewing up my belt at high speed. I'll probably just get another $10 belt too. My rollers also had a bunch of little flat spots on them, so replacement looks like a good idea.
My scoot is a 150 long case with 13" tires. It can easily cruise 50mph all day, but 60 is maxed out.
I don't think an expensive variator is gonna get me anymore top speed so I'll just go cheap. That helps keep the wife happy too!

I would feel better if you used one of our venders here or on scoot dawg forum. They really are worth the few extra bucks. Particularly whenever you are not 100% sure. Cheers lefty2

the Dr. Pulley Variator is an awesome variator. Partsforscooters.com carries them and they are worth the money. If your looking for a little cheaper one but still high quality i have about 5 different ones on my page and they are all awesome. not cheap china stuff like on ebay. www.scooterelements.ecrater.com/c/135066658/transmission

I don't really do scooter racing, but it would be nice to get more realistic top speed from the beast. Id spend the extra cash to get an extra 5 mph out of her. I know the original one on there was junk, but it was good junk till I got my hands on it..hehe
Thanks for the links and I'll consider it! I have the right tools now so I won't break another one.

Heavier roller weights will help with the top speed.

Roller weights simply shift the power band.. what you may gain on the top you loose on the botton...
Tip... buy good quality aftermarket products... they will pay for themselves in the long haul...

I usually try to stay off these threads, as I don't want to sound like a product shill, but man, the Dr. Pulley variators are worth the money all day long. The quality comparison isn't even close to the cheap stuff, and I should know; we've got plenty of both in our warehouse.
The HiT Clutches? They are great, but not for everybody, Dr. Pulley rollers and sliders (they do make both) are very nice, but once again not for everybody due to cost, but the variator that they make? For everybody. Easily.
Matt
Anyway, just my personal .02.

Well I bought it back in 2009 and at that time is was $91.00 shipped. You also get your choice of weights also the Fan Plate has slits for more cooling. Alleyoop

The thing is, the outer plate(with the fins) is bigger than the inner on mine. So the belt never gets as high as it could....
Most places tell the diameter of the biggest one, but not the inner(smaller one).
It really doesn't make sense since there s more room closer than further away from the case. Not much room, just about 1/4 inch. But still
The el cheapo is shipped from some place in Texas so that makes me feel a little better about it. I think they might be the same place I ordered my $30 carb from? Maybe my $10 belt too.
I have recently been burned from eBay though so I am somewhat aware of the risk.

Eric, 99% percent of the scoots come with the Fan Plate bigger than the Variator. And if your case has room and there is nothing that would interfere with the belt up high then you can get what they call a performance Variator which for the 150s they always show them as being 114-115mm in diameter. The performance Variators for the 150s measure a hair over 4 1/2 inchs in diameter the Orginals that they come with usually measure just a little over 4 inchs.
Go ahead and measure across your Variator it is most likely a hair over 4 inchs.
Also if you buy on EBAY pay using PAYPAL, all you need is a credit card. That way only paypal has your credit card number and not the seller. If you pay with PayPal and something is not right you can dispute the buy If the product is not how it is advertizied. Alleyoop

Alley is right about Scooter Parts from EBAY..
BUT
IF you buy a new engine from an EBAY seller you are stuck should something not be right...
So, read what is covered under EBAY buyer protection BEFORE you buy...engines are NOT covered.

As always, I listen carefully to sprocket. I agree weights only change when you get the power.
I think that CVT/Clutch changes are more useful primarily to improve: 1. Durability. long range wear and tear. probably urgently so if you go from 9 Hp nearer 15 or more. 2. gearing improvement when you get your 150 delivering more power than your stock gearing will handle you nay be able to use another gear.. Getting the belt running a 4.5 " primary pulley instead of a 4" is about a 25% increase in the RPM of the rear wheel as the some engine RPM. about a 13% lower (higher speed)gear ratio on the front accompanied with about the same on the rear)
So if you have the power to do it, OK. But if you engine is stock you may not even have enough power to pull higher ratio at the same road speed ( speed on the block don't count)
