>>Most tachs you can wire to the cdi.
Untrue... it depends on the type of tach it is...

redrider the black and yellow wire is the positive... if you hook it up to that it will either work or blow up the tach...

Redrider, Before you go messing with the wires did you check behind the Tach and see if the wires are not disconnected or not connected all the way? I would do that first then try and follow the wires from on back of the tach down and see if further on down the connections are bad. Unless someone re-wired the sucker or something it may just be something simple. I know when I was just replaceing my lights with LEDS on the instrument panel that I just happened to get my hands in there and pulled the Volt meter wires apart from its connections. Alleyoop

Thanks for posting that diagram sprocket, and yes i agree, blowing up your new tach is the last thing we want. Didn't you say you had a multi meter? You could test the wires to see what they are putting out to see if it would blow or not. Take a look at the helpful diagram sprocket posted and match up the wires and test the one going to the coil.

I have had the back of the instrument cluster off it a mess , but I will take it off again .Everything seems to be connected .The problem is I did not see any wires attached to the tach .There is a small opening beside the tach that has 3 wires coming out of it ,but I do not know if they are tach wires or not

Well if they are coming out by the tach i am sure they are for the tach One probably for the light one ground and the other for the tach itself. The ground are usually Green. Alleyoop

See if one of the wire from the back of the tach is BLACK WITH YELLOW STRIP on it. That should be the one. Alleyoop

Well whats going into the actual tach probably a Yellow, green and black which should be connected to a plug that in turn plugs into another plug which has the Black and Yellow strip connecting the yellow from the tach. The green is probably a ground don't know what the black is though could be a live wire. Alleyoop

The tach is WORKING .Ya'll want believe this one .I pulled the front cover off behind the cluster .I found the wire black and yellow .I got the dvom out I tested the wire from the connector behind the cluster all the way to the cdi wire was good .I was like O know the tach is blown .I eased out the 3 wires that was in the cluster .I took the 3 screws out of the tach its self .There I was tach in hand .I got my flashlight looked at the tach .THERE it was the problem .A HUGE spider web was in the inside of the tach .One of the real white thick webs binding the needle inside .I got my knife out and eased the longest blade threw the web .This huge spider ran out .I will clean it better with a Q-Tip and get all that web out of there .I started the scoot there it was tach WORKING.But the fuel gauge does not work either .I seen it move too when I was in there so before I put it back together I will fix that lose connection too .THANKS TO ALL
