Motion Induced Blindness This is frightening! It works exactly like it says, and is one major reason people in cars can look right at you when you're on a scooter etc ---AND NOT SEE YOU. Click on the link below for a demonstration .... www.msf-usa.org/motion.html

Very cool man! If you guys didn't click on Sprocket's link do so, it's amazing. I've read a lot of studies on that kind of thing but never seen it illustrated like that. When I ride and I think somebody doesn't see me I swerve a little and flash my brights to break up the fixation pattern. I've still had people pull right out in front of me and I know they honestly just didn't see me. Like KZ says, ride like you're invisible. Rich

thats trippy, get dizzy after looking at that for 20 mins lol its pretty crazy how that works, i guess thats why they tell you not to keep a dead stare while your driving, to frequently check your mirrors so you dont have an affixed gaze.

Being "pre-occupied" thus the cell phone was invented...

This is the main reason I stopped riding 20 years ago. Three accidents with "sorry I did not see you". The first was the worst one Yamaha XS 850, last day of school, four giggling girls in a car turned left right in front of me so close I had little reaction time. I just jumped and caught my knees going over the top of the car then did a lot of tumbling and sliding. I had a leather jacket and helmet but the jeans weren't much help. The only good thing was that I was going to make my last payment at the bank.
The last wasn't an accident but very close. I got the bike to a complete stop with out even chirping a tire and was just a few inches from the door. That bike was an XS 650 I stopped riding it and sold it for $300 6 mos. later.

If I had to worry about "Sorry, I didn't see you" I'd never leave the house. Cycle Guide magazine did a piece in the 1960s about motorcycles disappearing behind cars, poles and billboards. WE even blend in with backgrounds in the quick glances drivers do at intersections. I disagree with many of MSF's doctrines and now I've found another. Anticipation is the key to surviving on the streets, not strobe lights, loud pipes or obnoxious clothing. Read this and think in reverse. How you can avoid the mistakes drivers make in not seeing us. www.rta.nsw.gov.au/roadsafety/motorcyclesafety/breakinghabits/training.html

Hah! Rich, I bet you had to dig for that one! Good thing that when I'm on the scoot, the Starbucks goes under the seat!
