Hi, I recently bought a used scooter (150cc ruckus clone) and wanted to start making little mods to it. This is my first scooter and I'm learning as I go. I want to lose the huge air filter box and replace it with a simple air filter. My question is this: there is a smaller triangular shaped box approximately 3-4 inches attached to the air filter housing with two hoses coming out of it. one hose looks like a drain or vent of some sort and I want to know what the other hose is going to? what is this little box? I just want that unsightly box gone, but I'm concerned about that little hose. If someone could help with some info I'd sure appreciate it.

That is most likely the Vent box for the crankcase. If you follow the hose back it will connect to a Connector on the Valve Cover of your motor. You can also take that off and put a Fuel Filter on the end of the hose and Zip Tie it up high on the frame. That is so if it squirts oil out it will drain back into the valve cover. Alleyoop

Have you considered a Uni air filter:
They connect right on to the carb and you can get rid of the ugly airbox and hose. Check back with us if you decide to go that route. It's a little more complex than just hooking it on. Rich

Hiya doin Bashan, that is exactly the same filter I intend to put on. I'm also replacing the exhaust and changing the main jet. Can you recommend the proper size for the jet. Also is there anything else I should know before turning the wrench. Thanks in advance......Lon

Make certain you OIL a foam filter like the manufacturers tell you to... otherwise they are useless...
Only special filter oil works...

From what I see and hear, I am not at all confident it is worth the hassle of changing and maintaining. I really like the clean air a stock air cleaner gives. Perhaps a well maintained foam filter is equal but it also is noisy and not the kind of sound I like. I frankly think "performance" exhaust is also grossly overrated- but gosh I like the sound of some of them.
I have yet to see any real repeatable 3rd part test reports. Lots of anecdotal reports but not 3rd party. Even the manufacturers do not have any lab tests to share that I have seen.
If you really want more power, get a 250 with water cooling and 4 valve heads for probably less money than buying a used 150 air head and trying to get it to have power. If you want the sound cheap and have access to welding ( wire or gas) build your own exhaust., .
Of course I am not talking about limited displacement racing.

The way the Airboxes on some of the scoots are they are very restrictive and due to EPA they are set to run very LEAN. So like any hot rodder knows if you want more power a motor needs more air and more fuel. And most of us always want more power that is just the nature in us. So the cheapest way to get more power without having to spend a couple thousand more over what we already have is to go the cheapest way to get more power.
To do that you need to feed the motor more fuel and more air so a Free Flow Filter and Up Jeting will cost you maybe $30.00 bucks way cheaper than dishing out a couple thousand for a bigger machine. As for filtering UNLESS you ride on dirt roads and sandy areas you do not need a HOSPITAL CLEAN AIR type of enviroment for these motors. Alleyoop

Hi,new guy here...I have a Keeway hurricane and made the mistake of drilling 2 1 inch holes in the air filter cover...this gave it so much air there was no vacuum at the carb venturi and I could'nt get past 2/3 throttle or it would just shut down....BE CAREFULL on 2 stroke engines...there not like a 4 stroke..Jon

I'm doing just fine thanks. I ended up with a 110 jet on that with out a performance exhaust so you're probably looking at 112 or 115. You'll have to get extra jets and just keep experimenting. I had so much trouble with the mounting bracket that they sent me with the exhaust I finally said screw it. It ran great with the stock so what the hell. I did use the chrome manifold because it held the carb more securely but I couldn't tell any difference with the performance or the jetting.Hi,new guy here...I have a Keeway hurricane and made the mistake of drilling 2 1 inch holes in the air filter cover. Hey new guy, welcome to the monkey house (Vonnegut). If anybody drills too many holes in the air box just duct tape over them until you get the right mixture. I have actually used that method to adjust the mixture, it works.

I have actually used that method to adjust the mixture, it works. On the 49CC Wildfire I drilled two 1" holes, left stock jetting. Found on cool days it was too much air, so I taped them. Experimenting with this I found tape on one hole helped on cool days, (air is denser on cool days), in the summer on hot days the two worked great.

welcome din !!!!!!!!!!!
I know this is your first post , however it may have been a better idea to start a new thread with your question . Pictures tell the story best , if you have trouble posting pictures all you need to do is ask how too . We all have been there and have learned how to on the boards both our scooters and our way around the board .
