A gal I know has a Vino 50cc (4000 miles on it, last serviced at 3000 miles) and she can't get it past 30 mph. Bike starts great, idles great, decent tires. I figure with her weight she should be able to go faster.
Can any past/ current Vino owners tell me what kind of speeds they are getting? I want to know if it's just the way the bike is, or if there's something wrong with it.
It's been 2 years since I owned a 50cc scooter (Lance Charming 50), but I thought it averaged low 30's (170 lb rider).
Thanks.

I can`t be sure but I think that the Vino had two forms of derestrictor fitted. One is a funnel shaped piece of metal in the mouth of the exhaust downpipe. The other is the common nylon/plastic washer fitted between the two halves of the variator. You`ll need to remove the exhaust and look into the downpipe, the funnel shape can normally be removed by twisting with a pair of pliers and a screwdriver. The nylon ring is a bit more difficult in that you`ll need to remove the drive belt cover and one half of the variator (held on by a nut). Remove the ring and put it back together, you should notice the speed go up to at least mid 30`s, sometimes 40.

Sweet!
That's good to hear that the bike is running correctly per Yamaha, but that still sucks not being able to go past 30.
Anyone know why they restrict them? Emissions? Taxes? Mechanical problems?
Has anyone had any concerns/ issues/ tips after they've de-restricted their bike? Overheating, running lean, belts, weights, wear etc?
Thanks again

Not sure what the rules are elsewhere, but in the UK any new 50cc is restricted to 30mph by law, as they are classed as mopeds. Derestriction is very common and doesn`t cause any problems.

Apparently there's a washer on some 50cc scooters that keeps the variator from closing all the way. I think the only way to check is to pull the variator outer pulley off:

When I had the Lance Charming I found a restrictor plate in the air box. I took it out. I know I could get the Lance up to 40 (indicated) before the shrieking engine made me chicken out and back off. Mad Collie has made the same observation as he has used it.

Thanks for the help so far everybody. Does anyone have a picture of the restrictor in the downpipe of the exhaust that Rob mentioned? I googled it and found some photos of the downpipe AFTER the cone was removed but none with it. www.provoscooter.com/exhaust-derestrictionI'll be sure to take photos of everything I do and post them for future reference.

The restrictor funnel looks like this when you have the exhaust off. Sometimes you need to grind the weld off but more often than not you can just stick a screwdriver down the hole and wiggle it from side to side and the weld will break off.

2001 thru 2005 model year vino 50s were 2 stroke and came restricted to comply with state moped laws-top speed 25 to 30mph....2006 and new vino 50cc are 4 stroke and not restricted-top speed 40 to 43 mph if its a 2006 or newer then it can be someting as simple as low tire pressure or something along the lines of worn out rollers or wore out belt

Ok well we got the exhaust and variator restrictors out and are now able to reach 36 mph. Low end acceleration is much improved too.
I broke a screwdriver trying to pry the funnel out of the exhaust so I took it to a welder/ trailer hitch installer. I gave the mechanic a six pack of beer and in 3 minutes the exhaust was opened!
Top speed after the variator washer was removed was around 32mph and after the exhaust restrictor was removed it jumped to 36.
Thanks for the help everyone

There was a washer that rested above this that was removed for the picture
