What is the life expectancy of disc brake pads under "average" usage? Do most people change as needed, yearly, or otherwise...?
Thanks

Average usage covers a lot of territory. I changed front pads on a goldwing at 65k, sold a bandit with 32k and original pads, the rear pads on my majesty with 15k were 1/2 worn out when I changed them because I had it all apart so why not. I seldom use brakes if I can use the engine to slow down and do not follow closely. I live on top of a steep dirt/gravel road and only touch brakes coming down it with all 3 scooters a couple times.

No, the pads should last quite a bit unless of course you always going fast and standing on the brakes. I have almost 10K on my front and rear disc brake pads. Alleyoop

A good rule of thumb is change them when they get down to the thickness of a dime.

The first time I got rear brakes pads, they were costly from the yamaha shop, the last time I got them on ebay and they seem to be wearing better

One other thing about a majesty is that it has a parking brake that is a mechanical linkage which is part of the rear caliper. I was not the original owner and many people have premature wear out on the rear brakes because as I believe, from adjusting the mechanical linkage too tight. Mine was tight enough when I bought it to stop a scooter going highway speeds. It is now just tight enough to keep the scooter from rolling forward and off the side stand. Gear driven scooters and bikes do not have the problem of rolling forward off the side stand if left in low gear.
Rear pads should last almost forever.

Rear pads should last almost forever. The Rowdy has a parking brake also. It appears to go to a standard drum brake setup on the rear wheel. The caliper for the disc brakes is on the opposite side. My parking brake seems awfully tight now that you mention it. I will check the adjustment in the morning. May need to back it off some. Thanks
