YY250T won't start By texware (Read 2,017 times)

After getting my battery issues sorted, electrically, my scoot seems sound. I managed to get it started, ONCE, while I was diagnosing the bad (new) battery. This was before I drained the fuel and added some SeaFoam treatment to fresh new fuel.

How the starter runs REALLY fast and there are no "catching" noises. I am fine doing remove & replace, etc, and I am reasonably proficient at electrical problems (when I am not absolutely green at the product!) but I am not wonderful mechanic.

Where should I start? For what should I look? My wife is whining at me non-stop that I wasted my (our) money and that it will never start (but I think the real problem is she is *drooling* for a chance for me to give her a ride on it!).

In case I did not state this clearly enough: HELP!!!

Well since you drained the gas it takes a bit for it to get the fuel up to the carb again. But I would imagine you have cranked it quite a bit and the Carb bow if it was getting gas is full.
FIRST:
Check and make sure the KILLSWITCH is on the run position:
SECOND:
Check if fuel is being pumped to the CARB, take the fuel hose off the carb and put it in a container and see if when cranking fuel is coming out.

If not check for a Clogged Fuel Filter, disconnect the hose going to the Filter from the pump and crank again. If still no fuel then take the fuel cap off the gas tank just in case it is not venting.

If still no fuel then check the hose going to the pump from the tank, if gas is there then you know you either have a problem with the pump or VACUUM going to the pump. So check your Vacuum hose going to the pump, YOU CAN ALSO suck on the VACUUM pump and see if fuel THEN FLOWS.

If all that is good you have fuel going to the carb, then check for SPARK pull the BOOT CAP off and plug on the motor and if you have a spark plug laying around stick that in the BOOT CAP and hold it against the MOTOR OR VALVE COVER and CRANK it see if it is sparking.

If Sparking then it probably is the CARB is not allowing fuel to be sucked in and it needs to be cleaned out. The Pilot Jet and Passage may be clogged.

Last but not least is adjust your valves, they may be tight and your loosing compression.

thank you much. I pulled the plug and it makes a snapping noise when I run the starter. My battery seemed low, though, probably from cranking it so much. I put it on the charger and it was down to 25%. It is almost re-charged now. I will go through your check list once it is charged.

Yea, start with the easy stuff first, once the bad leg is identified, ELECTRICAL, FUEL, MOTOR then we can go down the bag leg and find the culprit.

Ok, I double checked the spark and that is fine. However, when I put my finger over the spark plug hole, I felt NO pressure so I suspect the engine is not cranking and the starter motor is free-wheeling

What should I check, now?? I am starting to get a bit discouraged. Why did it start the other night and now it will not!?!??

Ok, lets first check if the CRANK IS ACTUALLY turning, stick a piece of stick or Straw down the plug hole and crank the motor over and see if the straw moves up and down.

Now when testing for compression you have to HOLD THE THROTTLE WIDE OPEN so it sucks in as much air as possible.
Get back on this test so then we can decide what to do next.

I managed to get a buddy to probe the piston with a long wire tie. The engine is not turning with the starter. could this be a solenoid issue?

Can you describe what the starter solenoid sounds like when crank over scoot.

The Solenoid does not make any noise it does nothing but pass voltage to the Starter. It is the Starter that spins and makes a whirring sound when volatge is allowed to pass by the SOLENOID.
The Solenoid will make a clicking sound if the battery is weak or the SOLENOID is bad. If the STARTER is spinning but not turning the motor over it could be several things.
One the gears on the starter are shot and not grabbing the IDLER GEAR teeth which in turn TURN the STARTER CLUTCH. Or the IDLER GEAR is shot or finally the STARTER CLUTCH is shot.

So first and easyest is to check the Gears on the STARTER that is only two bolts holding it. If they are good then It is time to take the Flywheel, Stator and the Right Half of the case to get at the STARTER CLUTCH and IDLER GEAR. It is most likely the STARTER CLUTCH that is bad. The IDLER GEAR is just couple of gears on a shaft, now on some they are held on by pins or clips and they may have broke or come loose and the gears moved out of position and now do not mesh with the teeth on the Starter Clutch to turn the CRANK.

Ok. The scoot is a 2008 with only 1347 miles showing on the clock. The guy attested that was correct on the title, but we both know what that is worth. Still, maybe it's right. Could it just be a case of something being loose and allowing the starter to not properly engage the flywheel? Thanks again for the help

Ok, I got past finals at school, Christmas shifts @ work, and food poisoning. Now I am back on the scoot, hoping to have it running by Christmas so I can do a 400 mile tour on it just to annoy my mom who has forbidden me from doing a 400 mile tour on it.

I pulled the starter, left it connected to the hot cable and used jumper cables to build a ground connection. It appears to be spinning strongly. I guess the next step is to look at the starter clutch

Now I have pulled the oil line and all the various bolts holding the flywheel cover, but of course, I have missed something or it is just nice and stuck because it does not want to pop off.
