Can anybody tell me if a can just get a spare key cut at the hardware store for a 2011 Jonway yy50qt 6 or has it got some sort of immobilizer fitted to it. The fuel cap is difficult to lock and I am concerned that my only key might snap.

Your local hardware store probably will not be able to help you. but worth a try if it's close. You may need to go to a locksmith shop. They generally have a wider assortment of key blanks to choose from.

I disagree, the hardware store is where I would go.
As soon as a locksmith finds out what it is for he will say sorry. Been there done that.
I have forgotten which car blank I used for a 50cc I did have to shorten the head on the key a bit though. My riva also has a key from the hardware store too. Home dump, and lowes are not a hardware store, chains like ace or truevalue have people that will take the time to match up a car blank and cut it for you. Locksmiths tell you to bring them a blank and they will cut it.
And when you get one use the new key and keep the old one for the spare.

If a customer brings me an original key I usually don't ask what is it for, unless I can't find a matching blank. A lot of Chinese made scooters are not in cross reference books. Also it is odd that a locksmith would tell you to bring him the blank to be cut. That's money out of his business. Now If you ask me to make a key without an original I will get your I.D., the make model and V.I.N. He did state that he has an original key. jct842 did you have an original key?

Had original keys for both riva and the chinese 50. both keys were made out of car keys for foriegn cars. The 50's key hole had a slight recess so I had to file some meat off the front side of key head to get it all the way in ign, the seat latch though did not have a problem as cut, the head of the key was just a bit larger than original. Wish I could remember which asian car he used, I still have org key and the new key is in her ign 10 miles from here. I want to say it might have been a hundai key blank.
I have had this happen in another state as well where a lock smith wont take the time to look though all his blanks for a motorcycle blank he does not carry, and just tell you to bring him a blank. Happened with my suz bandit too.

Jct842, On one side I can understand a locksmith not wanting to take time to look for a matching blank. Let me explain. Most shops charge an hourly rate and this is factored into the cost of cutting keys and they usually have a set price for this. Several factors are used in determining this price. Including time to locate the blank and actual time to cut the key. If they charge $4.80 to duplicate this particular key and they spend a lot more time to find the blank than they used in calculating the cost to duplicate a key, they will loose money. Now on the other side if they take the time to find a blank and record what blank was used. They will have a happy customer and the next time they cut another one of those keys they can make a profit.

Same thing happens when you try to go to a motorcycle shop for a chinese repair. In fact the same thing happened 60 years ago when a fellow had a jap bike and needed a repair. With the bandit key I was told they don't carry them but could order it. I then went to my favorite hardware store and they made one from a car blank! I could care less about the plastic crap on the handle of the key but I suppose some people do care.
