Hiya. My rear brakes are really mushy on my jonway, and I was wondering what the order of checking things is? Check the cable/electrical, then.. what? What steps do I need to take? Anyone got a tuorial on checking this, changing the brake pads, etc?
Thanks for any and all help -Jen

I`m presuming that this is a drum brake as you mentioned cable ? Sometimes the shoes/drum just need a good clean, or it may be that the cable is stretching. First port of call would be to take the brake apart and clean/lube it, then re adjust the cable and see how it goes. If still no good then it might be time to replace the cable. Lube a brake? The pivot/cam pin on the drum brake needs lubeing with copaslip or it will seize in it`s mount over time.

Actually both Rapid Jim and Rob are correct. The moving parts on the brake mechanism need lubrication but keep it off of the pads and drum. I use hi-temp all purpose grease:
I scruff the pads and clean the drum with steel wool but make sure you vacuum up all the metal before reassembly:
When I read "mushy" the first thing I thought was disc brakes but that would be rare on your bike. Just in case they are, here's a couple videos on how to bleed them.

Very helpful! Thank you all. I really need to do this, because my rear brakes hardly can stop my bike now, and I get this inconsistent braking, and pretty much just locks up the front, and puts me into a skid. And that is not fun.

I just thought of something, my wife was complaining that her rear brake was mushy and it turned out that the adjusting nut needed tightening. If you have drum brakes there will be a notched bolt at the end of the cable. Turn it in until there's about a 1/2" of play in the brake handle.
