If mixing sizes by alternating them in the variator how does this effect the variator? Or is it the same as having 6 of the same size weights?

Honestly I haven't tried it but have read about it being done. Im guessing it allows getting different overall weights using what you have. In theory three 16s and three 14s weigh 90gms divided by 6 average 15gms. Functions like 15gm rollers? Cant say. Somebody with mixing experience chime in please.

As long as you do not put different sizes directly across from each other it is fine. If it takes 6 weights you could put a 12 across from a 12, a 13 across from a 13 and a 14 across from a 14. If you put a 12 across from a 13 you are now out of balance and some thing is going to break.
Especially with a too small an engine or an over weight scooter the stock weights are only optimum for a certain weight rider. If you are much more or less weight than the rider they had in mind you need to find some weights that are right for you.

What about engagement speed and noise? Maybe heavier or lighter weights act independently from eachother and maybe are not in sync all the time.

That's the whole idea about mixing weights. By having two different weights you get some of the advantages of both. Faster starting pick-up and higher top end. Not as fast or as high as each set by it's self but some of both. Increase each alittle instead of having to sacrifice one for the other.
