I have been doing some research on Ignition Coils, since I am getting ready to replace one on an older 2 STROKE ENGINE.
What I have read has basically told me that, a 2 STROKE ENGINE, with NO CDI BOX, gets the firing points from the MAGNETO. So every time the magneto turns past the pick-up, it sends the signal to the coil box.
So if I am correct, a 2 Stroke(50cc) Engine, can use ANY Coil box designed for a 50cc Engine.
That being said(IF ITS CORRECT)(AND FOR MY SITUATION) I PLUG THE *BLUE* WIRE(from stator, magneto etc) INTO MAGNETO, GROUND THE OTHER WIRE*BLACK* WIRE TO THE ENGINE MOUNT IT, AND PLUG IN THE SPARK PLUG.
I figured since I could not find MUCH info on coils, it was a good subject to discuss. I know that the modern everyday 4 STROKE scoot, NOW has a CDI box, plus coil. Which is a very different situation. My particular situation, is an OLDER(82) 2 Stroke. ARE THE NEWER 2 STROKES NOW ON A CDI+COIL SETUP?? THANKS GUYS!

Magnetos on mopeds are old school now and generally have contact breaker points which needed adjusting to the correct gap, and a condenser which stores energy to give a spark through the ignition coil. The modern cdi system uses the pass over pick up on the flywheel which sends a signal to the cdi box which then sends a signal to the coil. The essential difference is the way the spark is generated ie: contact points/condenser versus flywheel pick up/cdi. The contact points were a pain as they needed regular adjustment, and as they were constantly moving there was a good chance of heat/wear build up, sometimes leading them to welding themselves together. Modern twist and go 2 strokes are exactly the same set up as modern 4 strokes in that they have the flywheel pick up, cdi, and coil. As far as ignition coils go, although they may look different they generally serve the same purpose, have two connections and a high tension lead.

THANK YOU ROB! So for my situation, would you say that this CDI for a 2 stroke(50-80cc) Motorized bike kit, www.bikeberry.com/engine-kit-parts/electrical/cdi-electron-ignition-coil.htmlShould work on this: 1982 Motobecane 2 Stroke 50cc(COIL HAS ONE INPUT TERMINAL WITH A "Y" IN THE WIRE, ONE GOING TO KILLSWITCH, OTHER TO MAGNETO/STATOR/INPUT) AND THE SPARK PLUG WIRE OF COURSE. Looking at the item and the kit it is used for, then I`d think that is a combined cdi and coil which probably won`t work, although I can`t be sure. The engine in the kit probably has a modern pass over pick up on the magneto. Your Motobecane I would think has points and condenser therefore a cdi isn`t needed, just a plain coil. The coil you have with one wire is very probably similar to a minimoto coil, in that the one wire serves to feed the coil from the magneto and the 'Y' splice adds another wire to earth/unearth via the killswitch to stop/run the engine. Something like this www.ebay.com/itm/Gas-Scooter-Mini-Moto-Bike-Ignition-Coil-47-49cc-Parts-/170268902381?hash=item27a4d143ed&vxp=mtr#shpCntId

Kinda ya, the original one looks round, to bolt holes, that ground it, and serve as a ground for the circuit. One terminal, with a Y, one to kilswitch, one to stator/magneto, and the plug wire. Dang, I was hoping that this was as plain as it got, but if the CDI, is WITH the coil, in the same box... I might be in trouble, Like your saying... Now that I notice this, What do you think about a regular 12Volt coil for an older car? "IF" I am hearing you right, on the 82 motobecane, the stator points will give the timing and power signal, I just need to have a way to transfer to the spark plug VIA Plane Jane Coil.. Right? THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! It hasn't even got here yet and Im in trouble!.... ((

It may be a TCI ignition which is what it sounds like, the older bikes use to use TCIs. Alleyoop

I hope not Alley, I think the 79' Motobecane I was looking at DID have a TCI, BUT I THINK this 82' has a regular Ignition Coil. I just hope that the coil I purchased will work, as of right now after ROB's pointing out, the coil I bought probably has a coil and CDI side by side in the same box.
So I am expecting it to be to much resistance on the circuit to give me a spark... If it does not work, I will order a regular ONE TERMINAL, IGNITION COIL, for a 50cc
I am really starting to think that the best option was to actually buy a BRAND NEW 2 stroke engine kit for motorized bike for 169.99. Out fit the pulley to fit, and mount it on the moped...lol

I just got the Coil in the mail. I attached it, BLUE to Stator, Black to Ground, NOTHING...
I was afraid of this... BUT You live and you learn!
I need suggestions for the best possible replacement, ROB has already shown me a replacement original which looks like my best option so far...

That one looks promising Mike, one terminal on the COIL and then you plug in the Y connector and hook up the kill wire and magneto wire and it is cheap enough. Alleyoop
