OK, is the air compressed by the flow velocity into the scoop?
Is the compressed air denser, thereby constituting MORE air?
Then the dense air is chopped up by the fan, which disperses it, and once dispersed, covers more area, and this results in greater cooling.
See, I told you it works.
And Darlings, I must say, when you see my scoop, you will be obliged to say, oh, yes, that looks marvelous, so cool, so refreshing, simply marvelous!
Remember, it is always better to look cool than it is to feel cool, and my scoop looks cool.
Marvelous.

Since you have all the latest technological advances known to man, Bashan, why don't you PM me your address, and I will send you an example for review. Waddaya say, dude, you want a scoop? Well actually I am QUITE the technophile, here is my latest acquisition:
And yes Doooooood, I'd like a scoop and my address is PM'd.
There was a thread about the mysterious tube on the shroud but It seems to be flushed. I asked a few GY6 mechanics about this six months ago and they all said it was to heat the fuel in the float bowl. Here is a picture with the technical term for it. Rich

Well actually I am QUITE the technophile, here is my latest acquisition: I have one of them too... not that exact one, this'n here: Now if I could just get someone to teach me how to use it...

What is this... my multimeter is BIGGER than your multimeter? ;-)
Must be multimeter envy!

tvnacman now there is a multimeter with class...and accuracy...they are the finest.. without doubt.
It could just be a fluke.. but I don't think so...

I'm on my second fluke only because , someone stole my first . The worst part of it is the person that stole , has no idea how to use it , so it is sitting somewhere collecting dust .

Totally confused now! Scoop works or the scoop still does not work?

I think Hammerspur's is a little longer......HEY! WAIT A MINUTE!Totally confused now! Scoop works or the scoop still does not work? I would think they'd move a little more air when you're rolling so yeah I'd say they work. You'd have to run a few high tech tests to determine how much. I'll have to strap my high tech multimeter over my head to keep the voices out so I can concentrate long enough to insert my high tech temp probe into my a......er...uh.......filler spout. Rich

I'm on it, Chief.
Look for an airmail scoop coming in next Friday, Bashan. It is a drop-in unit, complete with snorkle cooler heater, and mystery plug, so all ya gotta do is replace your stock fan shroud and commence evaluation.

Yeah, I'm inclined to trust the engineers who designed the engine to have optimized the efficiency of all aspects before bringing it to production.
But I've never run a Gy6 at more than 6000 RPMs, so I'm only examining operation at less then optimum anyway. And I haven't had a cooling problem, either, at any ambient temperature.
I thought the scoop would be problematic at subfreezing temperatures, but it had no adverse effect, which would indicate its lack of influence on overall conditions.
If it was to enhance cooling, it certainly didn't increase as the air temperature dropped.
I think Bashan's work sets a threshold of 250 degrees as an operating temperature, so anything greater would be too hot, (perhaps), and anything less would be better (maybe).

Look for an airmail scoop coming in next Friday, Bashan. Well thank you! I think Christmas came early this year. ;D I’ll give it a good test and post the results on the forum. Rich
5-9-11 I received the cooling shroud/scoop in the mail and I'll start trying to do some test runs in the next day or two. Here's a link to the test thread. Rich

I've got a little more information about oil temperature issue I wanted to post before strarting ce's cooling shroud/scoop. I took the water cooled Pegasus out two days ago and blasted up and down the hilly main drag to get some heat worked up in the cooling system, I stuck my probe thermometer in the filler spout as soon as I turned off the switch and this is what I got: It looks to me to be about 225 and this is with the Peg's temp gauge smack in the middle of the dial. If you remember, the air cooled bashans came in around 250 to 260. Now I would say CF Moto was shooting for this temperature except there is some questionable testing issues. The biggest is that the engine cases are markedly different on the water cooled vs. air cooled scooters. The probe hits something I can't see in there so it's sitting at a different angle. Take a look below at the dipsticks, this tells you right away that the case is layed out differently. My point is you can't quite compare the temps since you can't duplicate the test. However, it's in the ballpark. The Peg's is the really short dipstick while the Bashan's is the cheap looking bent up unit. Stay tuned!
