newby looking to get my first scooter--advice By dawn (Read 824 times)

Hi guys! I'm brand new to this "scooter thing" and never thought it would be such a big deal to buy one! I stopped into a dealer and saw something cute and thought I could find it cheaper online and ran into your forum where you mention how easy it can be to be ripped off. I guess I'm looking for a little advice as to where to get a little 50 cc on the cheap but with a good reputable dealer (or straight from the manufacturer if that's a better way to go)--basically i'd like to get the best deal from the most trustworthy source.  I don't mind putting it together myself from a box unless that's super hard--i'm pretty handy with basic things and direction reading.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! -thanks much!

OHHHH, also, I was looking at an ice bear and fell in love with a domg fang pink pearl model but I understand they are no longer made NUTS, disappointed

If you're going to buy online. Killermotorsports, GS Motorworks, buy a Tao Tao 50cc.

Also look at www.craigslist.org

There are many good scooters out there. A used Kymcco tops the list.

If I had my heart set on a 50cc I would really look long and hard at a Honda Metropolatin either new or preferebly used. You can find a nice used one for ~$1000. It is the best 50cc scoot that has ever been under my butt. I would also reconsider the 50cc though as it seens alot of folks buy a 50cc and in a month or so wish they had gotten a larger scoot. A 50cc is good if you don't plan to go more than 35~40 mph but the 150cc just opens so many more oportunities to ride that in the long run you may get more enjoyment out of the larger scoot.

Yes, you have to shift but there's no clutch. You roll off the throttle and select a gear. I put a milk crate where the passenger seat is/was and carry a lot of items in it. Over 100 mpg and very easy to maintain. Mine has been as reliable as any Japanese bike I've owned and it rides nice too.

If you have a bunch of hills in your area, I would lean towards a 150cc. A good used 150 can be had for the price of a new 50cc. A motorcycle endorsement is required in most states for a 150 but it's not hard to get and you will learn a lot in the process.

dw is right on the motorcycle endorsement. Even if you plan on and get a 50cc I would feel a lot safer knowing I had the better license. Even reading the rules of the road book most states put out has things you need to know about the 2 wheels you intend to get. A lot of colleges have courses, and some free, that ends with the endorsement.

400 bucks for mandatory safety course, insurance, tag...i would rather walk.

Now, Dawn, tee hee hee, I'm so nervous! Is my avatar on straight? Dawn, a 150 weighs just a tad more than a comparable 50, but is a lot faster, and...um....well that's it I guess, it's a guy thing. Oh, they're a little more expensive too. Can I suggest somebody off of our vendor links? I know Jim from Rapid Repair and I'd buy from him in an heartbeat. The guys from MMM seem OK or they wouldn't have a tile but money has not exchanged between us. I would buy from them though, I have talked to them and I feel they're good people. We had one complaint on the forum but that was straightened out I believe. So go up there and click on one of those tiles and have that Visa out! Buy a scooter and we'll help you get that puppy cranked.
