it needs to be repair by some who knows what they are doing. maybe it would be patched with fiber glass and or stitched up with thin wire.

You can get a small fiberglass kit at any auto parts store for around $20.00. Just follow the instructions and do all the prep work first. Then work quickly. You van build up that hole by taping up one side with masking tape. Fill it with glass mat and rosin and let it set up. Then peel the tape off and sand it good and glass that side. Sand it smooth using finer and finer sandpaper till it's smooth. Clean it and paint it. Good as new if not stronger than new.

See my sig and avatar. I glued the cracks back together with superglue. Seems to be holding and not spreading for now. When I get a chance I'm going to do it right. |

Hey Matt, is this something you were surprised to see when you got home from your ride, or did you realize some gravel got kicked up when it happened? It makes me wonder if it might be a good idea to proactively reinforce that front panel with some fiberglass weave on the back.

It makes me wonder if it might be a good idea to proactively reinforce that front panel with some fiberglass weave on the back. Yes, it was. Sad and disapointed. I'm not exactly sure how it happened. I do know that I reinstalled it incorrectly a day or two earlier. I'm wondering if the stress put on it magnified by vibration caused it. Long story short, you must line up the plastic perfectly before tightening it down. You can't really see this, but there are several fractures. I super glued each one and they seem to be doing well SO FAR. I like your idea of fiberglass mesh. Wonder if that would be heavy? |

I hear PVC pipe glue works well . John Thanks John. I hadn't thought of that. I was actually considering using some Bondo to fill in the hole. Then I was wondering what garage floor epoxy would do for strengthening it. You can by Behr brand clear coat and I wondered what coating the front and back would do and look like. That stuff is acrylic and damn durable. Any thoughts? |

I never thought about the two part paint . It maybe to strong and crack or too thick and give an orange peel effect .

It's epoxy/glass or replacement in my experience with sportbike plastics,,,never had a repair fail when epoxy / glass cloth used,,it's cheap but a bit of a pain in the a$$ to do but not that bad,,,worse in the summer because it kicks off so fast in the heat,,,but use cloth and not the nonwoven mat,,much stronger and easier the work with in my opinion,and as a side i use artist pallet knives to get the epoxy in between the cracks,,,makes for a real strong repair
