Hey gang I wanted to get a consensus of when to get off of Dino oil to synthetic in my 150cc vespa,,, I don't want to do it on first change while I'm breaking this puppy in so I thought 1500 or 2000 ,,, what say you?

The rule of thumb is 1,000 miles. As you've discovered Richland Petroleum (Valvoline) bottles NAPA so even a cheap dino oil is still a quality lube. 1,000 miles assures that all the bits are bedded in before putting in a slippery concoction like synthetic.
I learned something else too, between you and me. There are only 3 companies actually producing synthetic oil. Everybody buys from them and mixes in their own brew of additives which explains why Amsoil is wildly expensive and NAPA is cheaper. It's not the base oil it's the secret herbs and spices separating brands.

1000 miles I concur. I use Rotella T6 5w40 because of those additives!

1000 miles I concur. I use Rotella T6 5w40 because of those additives! Psssssst, Rotella took the good snit out a few years ago. used to pour out Motorex and replace Rotella in the Factory KTM's until they took the good stuff out ie. High levels of Zinc, Phosphorus and Sulfur.

It sounded about right, made complete sense, I didn't read it and the person who told me is no bozo. He's one of the better people at the local NAPA and was the first one to point out to me that NAPA oil is bottled by Valvoline.

when i first got mine to break it in i used cheaper oil because i did 2 oil changes in the first 500 miles. when i do my next change i plan on using more name brand. i was using the Accel brand 10w-40 from wally world.

i plan on 75% napa synth with 25% lucas oil treatment,,,running that in my dr350 seems to be good with a very healthy temp drop when i did it ,,the dr is also aircooled,,

i suppose using something specifically designed for 4t scooter use would be better as it would be designed with the higher operating temps of an air cooled engine. you could probably leave it in longer between changes. maybe im thinking too far into things.

All I know about oil is this. 40 years ago it was nothing to work on an engine with under 75,000 miles and find it clogged with sludge. I have cars with twice that mileage that are clean as a whistle. Oil has come so far in the last 50 years that even cheap, dino oil is miraculous. The fact that we change oil every 1,000 miles or less helps too. I almost never hear about people killing mosquitoes or finding cams "lobeless" anymore, even on Chinese scooters.

Well the whole reason i brought up the subject is I've never owned a vehicle with this small of an engine and it's working high rpm all the time and on top of it all it's got my fat a$$ to carry,,, and it gets very hot here in California with road temps easily 120+ down where this engine lives ,,, when I did a back to back run from a switch off of Dino to synth in my dr there was better than 70 degree drop,,, now keeping in mind the oil before was ready to be changed ,, but I thought it was significant enough to justify the use of synthetic /Lucas and a very noticeable change in the transmission shifting ,,, smoother more positive faster ,,,

Hey clonedrone,,what oil are you running lately?,,, I sell ALLOT of oil. I use what I get for free, Mobil 1 racing, Gibbs dino and synthetics and Maxima Dino and Synthetics. Joe Gibbs Driven has some separation issues since Coach sold out to Comp Cams. Mobil 1 is consistant Maxima has big time stepped up there game in the high end Auto racing oil market, at this time I think its the best. I am good friends with a very Notable builder who runs the Dyno rooms at Amsoil. I have known John Klotz most of my life, they brew there own, I represented for them in the IRL series and provide a lubricant for the Alcohol motors.

So clone what say you of my mix I use,,,, 75% napa synth or royal purple and 25% Lucas oil treatment?,,, wasting my time? It just seems to work, and after 10,000 miles on a ducati s4 916 engine teardown no noticeable wear of any kind anywhere ( and this engine was not babied )
