Hello all and thanks for all your help so far with this great sight. I have a quick question I took my air filter of my scooter yesterday and look at it I didn't really think it would be dirty. But after inspecting it it was black like oil in one spot. Is that normal I will be getting a new one this upcoming week glad I looked at it I think it's like a paper one so cleaning it isn't an option since it is like paper and not foam like dirt bikes.
I was just wondering what would cause that black spot almost like oil Fuel possibly any insight would be apriciated. I have never replaced the air filter and put about 1700 miles on it since I've owned it. Just kinda wondering why it turned black and gritty and if anyone else has the same thing happen to there scooter thanks and hope everyone is having a great year and working the bugs out of there scooter if needs be.

Yes, it could be gas or oil with some dirt. That is what filters are for to trap stuff and not allow it to get into your motor and possibly into your carbs air passages and block them. Alleyoop

Thanks alley I was surprised at how much and how dirty it is I am hopefully getting a new filter from Yamaha dealer ship close to wear I live tomorrow. Alley how often do recommend changing them out?
Yeah I was really surprised to see it dirty glad I checked it. Mabey I will get better fuel mileage when I change it. I am getting about 60 to 70 now a gallon.
How would oil get in that box I would think that only gas could possibly sneak past. That is probley a stupid question since gas is a oil product right?

If the Valve Cover Vent hose is attached to the Air Box sometimes the Valve cover vent will squirt out some oil and then oil would get on the filter. And yes once you have a clean filter it will run a little leaner with more air coming in and you should get a little better mpg out of it. Alleyoop

I'm not Alley, but I would check your owners manual for service intervals. I check mine every other oil change. So far so good at 1900 miles. I never ride on dirt roads. If you do, I'd check/change more often.

Yea, check MOM and see what it says for mileage. I make the Air Filter part of my Spring Maint ,along with oil, gear oil, gas filter, brake fluid, plug, and air in the tyres (OK, I don't change the air)
Enjoy the new ride

It also depends on where the scooter is getting its air.
On a majesty and my 2.2 miles of dirt to get to blacktop I have to clean air filters at least in 1000 miles. It has 2 filters, one on each side, and together are as big an area as my car. With the car I clean the k&n maybe once a year and it goes up and down the dirt road maybe ten times for once with majesty.
A majesty has a factory defect as it's air to the intake comes from the dirt kicked up from the front wheel. It's like a vacuum cleaner for the dirt road!
My bandit 1200 for 7 years had its K&N cleaned 6 times and I was riding a lot more than I do now. And the filter was 1/2 the area of a majesty filters! (same road)

Thanks all for the input I was really surprised when I looked at the gritty spot in the air filter. I bought a new on like 2 or three days ago I am going to check it today. Seems like oil is getting on it. Alley said that the air box is connected to the valves some times. I have never had my storage compartment out of my scooter so I wouldn't know if its coming from there. the vino has been pretty good to me no complaints other than big hills very slow and hold up traffic. That is the only down side I don't like about it. It's a 125 so what do you expect right. Looking forward to taking it out today to get a spinning reel at ducks. I got to figure out how to get a lawn chair on there for fishing down at the river. Thanks again all and I will try to be helpful if your having a problem but you folks no bashan and alley are real good about helping I guese they have been on this sight since the beginning. Hope you all have a great year and enjoy riding be safe.
