Hello! Does anyone know how to replace the head gasket on a '72 1973 Vespa Piaggio Ciao. I need to know how to get the engine off and how to tear it all apart!

I'm sure it doesn't matter, but it ended up being a 1973, whoops. If that makes any difference on instruction.

Just a quick note ! There will be a service manual for the piaggio bravo ciao mopeds posted soon in the reference section. I did some hunting online for manuals in the last couple of days.

Okay so maybe it's not the gaskets..we compression tested and it's running at 115 PSI. Is that enough for a 2T?

i did some research on the net and 115 is plenty good for a 50cc 2t

Okay, so we have compression, and we have spark. Now all we need is gas..should gas leak out of the exhaust with the exhaust off? Maybe it's just not getting fuel...time to check the reed valves?

the ciao engine has a rotary valve thats actually a window cut in the side of the crankshaft,,,,fuel coming out of the exhaust is not good,,,check the float needle valve to make sure it's not flooding ,,,from my studies today with very minor modifications this engine/bike combo can reliably reach 40-50 mph speeds and last long,,,,it is a great design

i personally would drain all fuel/oil premix out clean the tank,,,install an inline cheepy paper fuel filter,,premix a fresh batch of gas/2t oil,,,check carb out to make sure everything is kosher ,,,set gap on new plug,,,oh and check air filter,,,lite that puppy and go for a ride

Finally bit the bullet and STRIPPED this thing. Pulled the head off and the gasket (that shouldn't have been there, it doesn't come stock with one, I think the previous owner tried a head gasket to get it to fire) was fine. Dropped the engine and pulled the cylinder off...BOOM! BLOWN CYLINDER GASKET! Got one ordered just now. Well let you know how this goes

I'm doing good after the fall. Not so sore anymore, but might need to see my chiropractor to put my back into place (I have a minor case of scholiosis so this was bound to happen anyways, the fall just accelerated it).
