some times it can be more economically feasible to replace the engine than to repair one.

unless the idle is off there should be no reason to adjust the carb

have the valves been adjusted? sounds like there may be an air leak somewhere.

have you tried a different plug, grounding it to the head and not the frame? i've had bad plugs before.

compression check should be done with the engine fully warm. a cold engine will read low

put a small amt of oil (like a tspn) in the spark plug hole and retest compression. if compression increases, it may be a piston issue. if no change in compression it may be a valve issue or bad head gasket.

i hear ya, hoping for a quick recovery. hang in there. a few words about manners/respect, i went for a ride yesterday and had a blast. as it was going to be even nicer today i grabbed my gear, jumped on the bike, fired it up and started out when i noticed my leg was getting wet. i looked down and my oil cap is missing, and the engine is throwing oil everywhere. what kind of sorry low life takes an oil cap?

may have found the issue! the plastic airbox on top of the carbs has a crack in it. it may be allowing unmetered air in. hopefully a few layers of silicone sealer will fix that. i've been enjoying the bike so far as it runs like a scalded cat all the way up to 11k. it's amazingly light and nimble and dusted the neighbors 1200 sporster.

still working on carbs. never had carbs fight me like this. mikuni bds33ss, i get them set then the next day one runs rich, reset and the next day a different one runs rich. keeps jumping around and driving me crazy. compression is good and no known air leaks so i don't know why a different plug gets dry fouled.

if the valves aren't adjusted properly they may not open completely as stated. this will cause excessive pressure buildup and possibly blow a seal, bend a valve or even destroy the piston, rod, bearing or crank so yes it can ruin a motor. you can also adjust idle speed on the carb.

if you're only going to change the filter a 120 may be too much. start small and work your way up.

so the window thermometer says 96 degrees and i figure why not? i start her up, cruise the main drag and side streets for about 20 min or so warming her up and hit the 4 lane. 106 indicated @ 9700rpm with more throttle left. i love this bike.
