Alleyoop, I was wondering about your description above as you were mentioning that the engine was running LEAN. Given that it is only occurring while goodrosnemesis was DECELERATING, would that not be due to the engine running RICH? As excess fuel which does not combust has the chance to do so in the flaming mixture which winds up in the exhaust system. When deceleration occurs, the throttle is closed so more fuel can make it into the mixture than air, correct? It would seem like two factors indicating rich mixture combined would lead to the backfiring. I am by no means an expert on the notion, so please explain if I am missing something. Personally I would think the motor is running rich and combined with deceleration the backfire would seem evident. I understand engines well enough, but sadly most of my training has been on engines which are other-than carbureted.

Gave it a try with 87 the other day... did not run well. It hasnt been running well for a bit, really rich, but this definitely made it worse. Here in Utah the fueling stations only offer 85, 87, 89, and 91. I wouldnt have gone for 85, but might try a small amount of 89 to see what it does sometime; will probably stick with 91 from now on though. Boris

Rabbit Trail.
As the manual mentioned on page 19 of the thread, compression ratio is 10:1. I read the octane post the other day, does that mean the linhai needs higher than 87 for optimum performance? Anyone have the compression ratio for the helix?
Thanks,
Boris

AC or DC?

I've just started getting involved with the electrical system on my 08 yy-250-t and have read posts and seen parts for sale indicating that the electrical system might be AC or DC. What would be a good way to find out. I found one thread out there that flatly said if its Chinese, then it is DC. My rectum-frier has 6 wires coming out of it: 3 yellow, black, red, and green. There is a small heat sink next to it with a red and a black wire coming from it. IDK what that is. CDI reads: SMBD250C among other things.
I tried to conduct a search before posting this, if there is another post which explains this, please send me the link.

Vansmack2,
Sorry if I wasnt clear, I was tracking the second vent line; thats what I was asking about. Sorry I wasnt much help, I'm as boggled as you are. If it is not for trickling some form of additive into the tank, I wouldnt know what it is.

So the mag powers the lights and everything? I am familiar with systems using mags for spark, but a generator or alternator would supply power for accessories. Guessing that the mag is on the flywheel where the alternator usually goes (at least on larger bikes)? Boris

Does the other vent hose go to the black canister? If you don't have one of those then it might be your fuel vent as alleyoop mentioned. Never seen that specifically though.

Check "Erratic fuel gauge tutorial by alleyoop" in the library under air, fuel, and carb. link ishttp://scooterdoc.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=intake&action=display&thread=7608 for a shortcut. That should address the fuel gauge.

Also does anyone know how many coils come stock on the 244 Helix stator? I would like to know so I can figure out what the specs are and dont overload the system with any electronic devices. I am not familiar with the charging systems on these bikes at all. If we were on a boat or in a car I would have no problems.
Thanks, Boris

Ok, I ran the battery issue by my A/C Systems instructor the other day, if the battery is drained completely and charged with reversed polarity, you assign polarities opposite those marked on the post. The closer to 0 charge one gets when this happens is what makes the arrangement less volatile. It has apparently been this way for over a year without incident, as per the previous owner. For myself, the battery has been clearly marked, charged (still reversed, as the charger wouldn't take the battery proper) and is sitting in a box in my garage in-reserve. I do not believe I can take it back as I didnt buy it, and have no receipt; the previous owner does not have it either. No matter the battery is from the 150, the one that came with the 250 is finally well charged, and I am using that one again. Seat lock replaced with the one from the 150, no problem. Secondary seat lock @ the riders 6 o'clock is completely nonfunctional. Cable is present, but no springs at all. Should a guy purchase a new latch, retrofit the one in place, or are they generally problematic with riders letting them be as they fail? I know several smaller companies or names all fall under Jonway anyways, but where the title says shenke and jmstar, the vin plate says Jonway. So I would guess that officially this is the Jonway YY-250-T. So now I know I guess. Reconfigured the battery wiring so the cover panel can be on with the charger lead extending out from the seat latch and back inside the compartment with no drama, looks clean. Somehow the remote starter now works intermittently, mp3 player still has no response. Drained the gascolater, no drama there, reattached the CDI which had liberated itself from the stock rubber mount, used zip tie. Overall things going well. Alleyoop, you weren't lying about the valve adjustments, looks easy as pie. We might have to go over the particulars sometime to see if they couldn't use a small adjustment. Any recommendations for a solid XL trunk with seat-back, preferably with reflector or lights? (similar to your silver bike Bhinch, dont know if it is an XL though.) And does anyone know of a kit, or has seen hard case saddle bags, or side trunks for this bike? Otherwise I will FAB. It would save me some time to know if any are out there.

Also, I bought a trickle charger. I have been using the battery to jump off the 250 when it gets low for the last two days. It is an ever start walmart battery. The first time I connected the cables... fire and sparks. I thought, here I've finally done it, checked it and the connections were right. Polarity is reversed with the + actually being - and vice versa. Anyone ever run into this? I even have to charge it reversed.

It is definitely a YY250T and says both Shenke and JMStar. That being the case, what is the difference between makes of the same model? shenke apollo? two words: good luck Boris

Thanks again Mike and Luke. Alleyoop... Its good to know the valves are easy to adjust, I was flying blind when I did the top end on the 150. I never knew what it was really supposed to sound like because the muffler was busted from day one. Replacing it with a fart can didn't help me much. There was some tapping, but not too much. Given I was working off of a 49cc manual I did pretty good, and she was getting around 80 when she died.
I really shouldn't have included the bit about the 6 oz, I'm used to having a 10+gallon fuel tank. I mainly attributed the sputtering to that after I put two and two together. She's been doing well enough since. It was actually the first time I have put anything other than sea foam in it and I felt bad when I did it. I just realized I hadn't run anything through yet and it was the second tank so... i did the bad thing. I saw post on sea foam as well, I generally only put about |- - - - -| that much in. Ha. I had thought about the auto-choke, but assumed it was flooding and not the other way around. It makes sense though, because after that timeframe she sits right there and purrs at around 1800; so we'll probably leave the idle screw where it is for the time being. I hadnt thought of the flasher, I might have to look into that once I turn it into a christmas tree. I had to use the 150 battery to jump off the scooter this afternoon, the battery seems to be sitting right there at the threshold and not doing too well after the first attempt. I guess the trickle charge will be next on the list. Apparently not all batteries are created equal, there was a bit of a foreshow when I lined them up. Either way I noticed one of the terminals was loose and that was probably all she wrote, we should be able to take her for a ride and tomorrow and be charged up by the time we get back. I will definitely lay off of the throttle, I've been giving it small 1/8th turns trying to milk it along and with mixed results, but now that you mention the auto-choke it starts to make more sense. Well thats it, I appreciate the help so far. See that wasn't near as long as the first post.
