And, JR, by "old" o-scopes, do you mean analog ones?
A analog o-scope will work.

I might be more confused than ever. Just to make sure I understand, the stator frequency is all over the place but is stored in a couple capacitors of opposite polarity. Then, when the trigger coil "triggers", they both release a burst of DC of opposite polarities. This DC then hits the rectifier, where it is smoothed into a somewhat steady DC voltage?

Hey JR, I don't know much about exactly what the CDI does, but I am curious why it takes a special instrument to check it out. What instrument is required? I'm not having any problems. I'm just curious, that's all.

Here LUKE, I’ll save you a little effort here. You can just copy and paste this as your reply: Make sure you change out all the wires in the electrical system because those crap Chinese scooters are designed to run on metric voltage. I’ll be devoting a whole chapter in my book to that. It’s right after the chapter called “Body panels don’t match up with the frame on any scooter other than a Morphous.” By the way, I’m designing my own body panels for scooters. Good luck getting it to run on Monday. You’ll probably break down at the end of your driveway and after wallowing in shame, start PM’ing ScooterDoc members so you won’t have to lie to me and say things went perfectly. Don’t lie. I can’t wait to start my book.

Today's update: I did some work on the scoot yesterday, but didn't accomplish much. I got the valves squared away, both set to .003". I spent about two hours out there yesterday. The remainder of the time was spent trying to organize my pile of bolts and screws and remember what goes where.
Today, I replaced the vacuum lines that operate the fuel shutoff and carb. I left the vac lines for the PAIR system as is because I'm still debating removing the PAIR all together. I changed the engine oil and inspected every electrical connector. Everything was great, except for one of the connectors for the front turn signals. The brass female fitting on the end of one of the wires had not been seated in the plastic housing. Obviously, I fixed that. Another issue I corrected was that the connection from the scoot to the front-left turn signal was about 3" too short. I trimmed back the electrical tape and sheath to give me some extra length there. While I was going through all the connectors, I gave them all a good dollop of dielectric grease. I did a trial fit of all the body panels. It was a little tricky. Everything seemed kinda twisted or sprung. The plastic pieces wanted to lock together one way but it didn't really agree with what the frame was doing. I just worked from the middle of each piece out and left all the screws a little loose until I got them into place.
All that's left is to take the bucket back out, put the airbox back in, fill it up with a little petrol, and tune the carb a bit. Weather forecast is 64 degrees on Monday, and I'm on spring break with no kids and the wife works all day. With a little luck, I'll be on the road all day. I'll keep you posted.

No worries man. It's an illusion. The fuel line clears both shocks by about 2". Looking down on it, it makes an "S" shape that clears both shocks. Thanks for the heads up though!

Is there some special trick to putting a plug in, twowheeler? I put an NGK in my scooter yesterday. I removed the old one and replaced with the new. I threaded it in the hole and tightened it down with a socket wrench somewhere between "pretty snug" and stripping the threads.

You guys are the best. Keep 'em coming. I don't have any iPods to give out, but I might send some press on nails and some mascara to Charity.

You got me dead to rights LUKE. I ignored all the instruction found online for doing a proper PDI. In my haste, I just tore the cardboard off of the crate, connected the battery leads up to some jumpers hooked up to my truck and tried to fire it up. When that didn't work, I started sending PMs to kz1000st. At the risk of voiding my comprehensive internet dealer warranty, I took off the valve cover. I'm gonna keep fiddling around in there with a screwdriver and a hammer until the thing starts, or until kz sends me a PM telling me otherwise. I'd appreciate any advice you could give me on getting the thing running. I don't feel so bad about the dealer not entertaining me. You're providing about all the entertainment I need buddy.

I'm with davec on this one. LUKE, you seem to be a real "outside of the box" guy. I'd love to see some of your designs also. I bet they're awesome. I can't wait to see them.

Hey Guys, As I think I've mentioned on the forum in the past, at 32, I decided to go back to school and get that electrical engineering degree I should have gotten 10 or 15 years ago. As a 32 year old college freshman, I'm taking all the classes one might expect. My English composition class requires that I choose a "subculture" of focus. The entire semester is based around a subculture I chose back in January. As I was in the thick of learning about scooters, I chose scooter riders as my target theme. All the assignments focus on the chosen subculture. For example, one assignment was to create some form of public service announcement related to your chosen subculture. Next week's assignment is an interview of a person or people in the chosen subculture. I’ve created a Google form with some interview questions. I'd love to be able to interview some of the fine folks from the forum. The entire thing might take 10 minutes to do, depending on how in depth you choose to go with your answers. I’d really appreciate it if those of you who choose to help me out can be as detailed as possible. Tell me your interesting stories. As mentioned on the form, I might want to follow up with you via a PM if you tell me something really interesting and I’d like to know more about it. If this sounds like something you’d like to help me out with, the questionnaire can be found at the link below. docs.google.com/forms/d/1X98Lh6zC1iBJ_Bbg9N6WDKJZbgYUbK2DQSnD4ArPQwI/viewformIf you have any issues with the form, or questions in general, please let me know. Thanks! Doc

It's been a few days so I wanted to give you guys an update on my PDI/Assembly. I've been waiting on fuel lines and other essential upgrades to come in the mail. I expected them this past Friday. I knew from the tracking information that a signature would be required. I had class on Friday but my lovely bride had the day off. Before I left Friday morning, I asked her to make she was here to sign for the package. Our mail normally comes within the same 30 minute window. After my calc class, I pulled out my phone. I had two texts from her: "The mail truck is stopped two doors down but I need to go to the grocery store." (Three WHOLE minutes later) "Screw this. I can't wait all day." She waited three minutes for the mail truck then left. Thanks dear. You're a peach. Anywho... I'm gonna swing by the post office in the morning on my way to class and pick up my gear. The weather is supposed to warm up a bit this week as well so I should be in good shape to get it put back together. Next week though... the wife works all week, the kids are in school all week, the temperature is forecast to be in the mid 40's, and I have spring break. With a little luck, I'll be riding my butt off for the better part of next week. It's still too cold to get in the garden. What else am I supposed to do with a week off?
