Lately, I have noticed a small oil spot under my Taotao 50. It's not consistently there, but it has showed up more often recently. While looking for the leak, I discovered a small clear tube attached to the bottom of the tranny case (obviously the cause of the spot), but searching through my several manual downloads, I can't find a reference to this tube anywhere!
Does this sound like anything anyone is familiar with, and should it be there and leaking like that?

FYI, I recently replaced the starter on my Taotao 50, and when the new part arrived it came with what looks like that same wiring harness. The only problem was that the stock starter I was replacing only had the RED wire going from the starter straight to the solenoid (I'm sure it was grounded - somewhere - but just not with it's own ground wire)! So if yours is the same, just use the existing RED wire instead of the new harness connection . . . it worked fine for me! By the way, congrats on the new toy! I actually lived on a 22' sailboat for a couple of years, and still miss being on the water (so I'm maybe a little jealous)! ::70::

THANK YOU, ALLEYOOP! I had a feeling that it wasn't limited . . . it just didn't - feel - like it was (not that I make it a habit to feel my scooter parts). I knew either you or Bashan (or both) would know how to tell; I'd be lost without you guys on this forum! I will post a pic just to make sure, but I'm almost positive that it would have been money wasted. Thank you again for ALL of your help. Drew

While researching future mods to make on my Taotao 50, I added a No Rev Limit CDI. After making the mods I have currently added (mainly roller weights and a windshield), it occurred to me that I don't know if my CDI IS rev limited! The outfit I bought it from apparently imports these directly from China (or wherever), and so far every speed-limiting safeguard has been removed (such as the washer on the CVT belt, exhaust inhibitor, etc.) OR was never installed in the first place. My question is, is there a way I can identify my current (stock) CDI to know if it is "limited"? One article I read (somewhere) said to look for a pink wire, and to remove it, but there isn't one! I just don't want to replace it and find out the original was fine.

Thanx jvino, I'll take your advice and start at $75 (you're probably right, I'm betting they grab it and run)! I just can't figure out where this fool's info. came from; everyone I've discussed this with has never heard ANYONE put a limit on a GY6 engine, but I'm thinking it's probably been rode hard and put up soaking wet. I'll let you guys know what happens.

My thoughts EXACTLY! Better yet, buy it, fix it, and sell it to one of their neighbors (ha ha ha)!

Here's one I'm betting no-one has come across yet . . . there is a 2013 Taotao 150cc scooter for sale in my neck of the woods that needs a battery, muffler, and A NEW ENGINE! According to this person, the engine has exceeded the recommended mileage. He has put 5,982 Km (3,717 miles) on it, so now it needs to be replaced! Has anyone ever heard of this "recommended" mileage before, and should I try to explain it to them or just "relieve" them of the scooter (at $200, it's a STEAL)?

I bought my Tao Tao 50 the first week of March. For a 2014, I paid $850 (tax, title, etc., etc.)! The scooter place was about 25 miles from my house, the scooter showed 3 Km on the speedo, and I averaged between 40 and 50 mph ALL THE WAY HOME. I don't know if my experience is especially unique, but over and over again I hear the "30-35 mph" restriction, or someone elated about their 50cc hitting 40 mph!! I'm running 4g "sliders" in the CVT, other than that it's completely stock!

Yep . . . starter button! I intend to order one, but meanwhile I substituted a momentary switch from the local electronics store, and owner and scooter are doing fine, thank you! Many kudos to Alley and Bashan . . . you two REALLY seem to know your stuff!

MANY THANKS to Alley AND Bashan! I'll try that. Sometimes I hear a single click, but mostly I hear nothing. However, it DOES seem to start after it has been sitting awhile with the button, so I could believe it's a weak battery. I'll do some more investigation and let you guys know the outcome. THANKS AGAIN for your help.

My Tao Tao ATM50 runs great now from kick-starting (thanx Bashan!), and I have replaced the starter AND bendix, and still get sporadic starts. I'm convinced it's either the kill switch or the starter button, because the brake light works on both the front levers (same circuit as the safety switch, right?), and I'm leaning towards the starter button due to the fact that the kill switch still turns the motor off, and must be in the "run" position to kick start it. Does anyone disagree? If there's something I'm missing (still a novice, after all) please advise me before I order any more parts!

I recently have been having trouble starting my Taotao 50. After experimenting with roller weights, I noticed my electric starter seemed louder than before. Eventually, it began to make a weird noise, so I turned to the old stand-by kick starter (thank goodness for the option)! It would start consistently on the first or second kick every time I used it over a period of about a week, but then suddenly it wouldn't turn over at all. This forced me to investigate the electric starter problem. To make a long story short, I "lost" the bushing that holds the bendix in the crankcase, so it was binding when I attempted to start the engine. I have already ordered replacement parts, but my question is this; shouldn't I be able to remove the bendix completely and still run on the kick start only? My theory is that by removing the bendix, it wouldn't interfere with the belt drive and I could still operate the scooter short term until the parts arrive. Is this even remotely feasible?

I just bought a 2014 Taotao 50, and after the first 1000 Km the idle began to surge. While investigating the possible causes, I noticed that the stock carb. that came on the unit DOESN'T have a fuel/air adjustment screw. As it turns out, I adjusted the valves and found a small gap in the intake manifold, and that corrected the problem. I'm still wondering how I can adjust the rich/lean mixture (in case I ever need to)! Also, there was a hose not connected to anything (turns out it has to do with the EGR system). I couldn't find anything to connect it to, so I plugged it with a bolt. Does this sound familiar to ANYONE!
