I was going to post this over in the wheels/tires, etc. board, but it would not let me start a thread so here it is. Just wondering what a good interval for replacing my front disk pads, and rear drums is. I have a little over 4k miles on them now. I know it would depend on how much wear, but is there a good rule of thumb?

OK Doc Here my 2 cents!!! This rule of thumb depends on how hard a person is on brakes, how fast you ride, how close to the vehicle in front of you, how soon a person starts braking coming to a stop sign, etc... I guess if you ride like I do, maybe not long, but on the other hand, I've never worn out a set of pads or shoes on any of my cycles... But between scooters & motorcycle & 5 days out of 7 I can ride a different machine each of the 5 days... But putting all that aside, the pads on my motorcycles have gone some where around 8,000 miles so far, & will probably go another 4,000... Don't know on the Chinese scoots though, haven't gone that many miles on a scoot yet, but they seem to be holding up pretty good...

Jake, we weren't trying to get all exclusive about the tech department but it was spiraling rapidly out of control with posts in inappropriate areas, questions in post areas, etc. So we made a technical contributions board at the bottom where anyone can post and then the mods were supposed to sort it out in the right area. It really hasn't panned out like we hoped........sorry. I guess in the meantime just keep doing what you're doing. Rich

bashan, no poblem, I didn't think it was an 'exclusive' thing. I thought maybe there was something wrong, or who knows what, but no big deal. as long as I get good input, I don't really care which board it is on.

IMHO one should check the front ones every oil change or 2000kms as just checking them at intervals can cause problems from my experience. Manuals tend to suggest to replace them once they are down to 2mm, but I find that does not give much mileage as the pads are only 5mm new. I replace mine when they are 1mm (whatever that in in inches). One's riding style can change and checking them at intervals can cause them to wear out before you notice it. happy scooting Kiwiscoot

Brakes, like others have mentioned, are subject to how hard and often you use them and what material they are made of. Each one's experience will be different.
2mm is about the thickness of a Nickle. I would agree with kiwiscoot on the 1mm option. (About the thickness of a dime). They are cheap so no need to scrimp though but I think you can go to dime thickness without any issues.
