We adopted a 14 year old black lab last year, because she looked like she needed a last few good years of life. I've literally taken on the role of "mothering" her. I feed, clean, and love her to death, and I have grown very attached to her in the past year. But I think she's reaching the point where it's almost time to go. She has been deaf since we got her, and over the past three days she has completely lost her vision. She still eats and drinks but she seems uncomfortable. She also has what we believe to be a cancerous tumor, which we think is depriving her skin of nutrients, as her skin is very dry and she itches constantly. There's really nothing left that I can do for her. I gave her a soothing bath when we got home tonight, gave her some water, an antibiotic, and a dose of pain killers. She laid down in a room and was shivering and making a moaning noise. I wrapped her in a blanket and made sure she was warm, and I think she fell asleep because she started to twitch like she does when she's asleep. This is just really hard to watch. We may have only had her for a year, but we love her so much, me especially. I can't bear to witness this, you guys. Sorry for the massive vent. I just needed somewhere to let all this pent up sadness out..

You're a good soul for taking an elderly dog. It's not easy, at all. But, you've been able to give her an incredible amount of love in her final years. That is one of the greatest gifts that humans can give back to animals, and it sounds like you've done that in spades.

Yeah, you're a good, caring person. It gets tough with a pet, they love you so much without question, and we as humans make things so complicated. But this is simple, it's her time to go, she wants to go, they know, and it doesn't scare them, it's part of the cycle. No heroic measures, just be with her and she will move on, it is the way of life. Rich

I cried for 2 days when my baby (dog) died. We knew it was coming. He had been in pain for a while and there was nothing left for us to do. So we loved him with that deep kind of love that fills your heart to exploding when something like this happens.
If you cry over her, then its all good. She knows how much you love her and she's returning it in spades. Love her enough to let her go.
I'll cry with you my friend.
As sad as this is, it helped me to let go of mine.

sorry to hear it she looks like a nice old girl. its really tough to go through.
few years ago i took one in she was old to. just lost her the other night. poor macey they went out to go to the bathroom before bedtime and she came back in and had a stroke or some kind.
it was super traumatic and the worst thing ive ever seen. ran to the vet but now i wish i had just ended her misery like she was beggin me to.

Pets are so important to us. You did a great thing providing a home for an older dog. I just lost a cat to cancer, and know how upsetting it is to loose a pet. Think of all the good times, and amusing things. It does make it easier. That last trip to the vet is very hard. Good luck

Sorry to hear about your dog face. You did a good dead and took the dog in and gave it a better life. That's great that's something to be proud of. Part of the life cycle is death. It makes me sad you are going threw a tough time seem like a good kid. If the dog is suffering do the dog a favor and do the job of taken care of the pain. It's totally up to you and your famly not trying to be cruel but if you believe the dog is suffering might be time for dog heaven. That's pretty depressing sorry bud.

In my life I've had to let many pets go; dogs & cats & other critters. It never gets easier but you gave her a wonderful year. Sounds like a trip to the vet, maybe it's something treatable but if not, most vets will let you stay with them while they slip off. As hard as that is, it's what I do with ,y pets. It'd the final act of love, to be with them as they leave.
My heart goes out to you.

I have 3 yorkies, they are cared for like family, even ride with me on scooter rides. The oldest one is starting to get a little slow, he is now 9 years old. We had four at one time but lost one to a heart attack and there is not a day that goes by that I don't think of her.
It is hard to move on with this son but don't let this great dog suffer and just remember we receive rewards when we show kindness to any creature and person.

I have two cats and a dog that are getting up there in years. My female cat Zelda is 17 years of age. My male cat The Sarge is 15 years of age. Two weeks ago He was diagnoses with cancer and has a massive growth on his lung pressing on his heart. This is my dog Sierra, She is 12 years of age and has an immune disease attacking her blood platelets. Pets are part of the family and we have a special bond with them. Roy
