I filled up today then rode a good 9 miles and have less than half a tank of gas left over. whats up with that? That's not the 97 mpg I've been hearing about. What could be wrong? I saw a clip for the gas filter was on wrong today when doing my pre ride check and put it back into proper place but this was before i filled up. it was never in that position before. i think someone has been tinkering with the bike. A kid or nosy neighbor. In a recent video I took with my cell a bunch of wires off to the side are hanging off. It seems that someone has been messing with them too as I tucked them all back under the bike neatly and it looks as if someone was tugging them. i doubt it was the G forces that pulled them out... Also the muffler became quite noisy as well as the engine in general it used to have a pur to it but now it seems to be struggling and sometimes there is the occasional put put pop that prompts bystanders to duck. I'm doing an oil change tomorrow.
Anyway whats up with my gas mileage?

As far as the gas is concerned if your going by the gauge they are way off. You need a stick and mark the stick about 1 1/2 inchs apart for every gallon then stick it in and see where the gas level is.
As far as the popping when is it popping when you accelerate or decelerate?

One scenario would be that gas is getting past the vac fuel valve and into the intake manifold. This would cause popping in the exhaust due to all the unspent fuel. Pull your plug and see what it looks like and pull the vac line off of the fuel valve and see if there's gas inside.

I checked the gas level with a stick and there is more than 3/4 tank left so yea.... Im almost positive it was over filled but still 10 miles consumed 1/4 tank that would mean about 40 miles per gallon... by plug do you mean spark plug? can you post a pic of the vac line? |

Yes, the spark plug. If it is getting too much gas it will be black. Here's the vac line:

If it makes ACTUAL POP SOUNDS not BACKFIRE(POW POW..Like a gun going off) it needs a little more fuel. You can turn the fuel mixture screw COUNTER CLOCKWISE 1/4-1/2 turn and see if that fixes it.
It could also be that the IDLE is to low and closing off to many of the FUEL OUTLETS by the butterfly
So you can also try bringing up the idle a little more.
If it is BACKFIREING on DE-CEL then you have a very bad AIR LEAK, usually by the Flange where it connects to the MOTOR or you pipe is cracked.

There should NOT be gas in the vac line. The plug should be light brown. If it is black and/or oily looking it is getting way too much gas. If it is bare looking it's way lean and will pop as Alley described.

if there is no gas in the vac line and there is fouling of the spark plug, what would that mean? Also is it possible to accidentally unscrew the part of the engine that holds the spark plug? My plug seems to be sitting out too far and the boot seems to sit too far out from what i believe to be the heat shield.
