Well I'd been itching to jump from a 150cc to a 250cc lately. I came across this 2009 MS3 250 Hyosung for $1,499 and 5kms. The wife and I went last week and bought it. Today I went to drive it home. I started out 15 minutes into an 1.5 hour ride home. The scooter started knocking. I lost power. Then heat shot way up. The scooter stalled. I pulled off the road. There was a lot of heat and steam coming from the engine. I let the scooter sit, then I tried to start it. As soon as I gave it a little throttle, it dies. The battery was pooched as well (too many start attempts). The shop came and picked me up. After sitting all afternoon at the shop they've come to a couple of conclusions. The idle adjustment screw was loose, causing the scooter to stall and knock (sounds a little weird). Then they replaced the thermostat. Engine still heats up too much. They clear a blocked hose. Engine still heats up too much. Now they're taking it all apart and suspecting either more blockage, or worse. The shop ended up paying my $150 cab ride home. They telling me once they have the scooter running at 100%, they'll bring it to me. Question. Do I run away from this scooter? Or wait and see? I'm sure they'll get it up and going. Thanks.

As long as they guarantee their work, and make note that it had a cooling problem, and if the cooling issue persists, they'll fix it free and clear, I'd keep it. And any future issues can be worked out as they happen.

The knocking is what scared the crap out of me. The heating issues can be fixed and aren't that big of a deal. If the knocking is gone the heat problems are manageable. Hyosung is a fantastic scooter. The guy may have unloaded it because he thought it was toast. The retail at KBB is $1,615 so even if you spend some you'll still be in the ballpark for a decent deal. Plus Hyosungs are those kinds of bikes that come in for more than KBB because they're hard to find. You should be fine, if you want to work on the heat problem with us we can fix that and you won't add to the cost of the bike. Rich

They say the work is guaranteed. Is it possible the knocking is from bad or stale fuel? When they had it running (after they adjusted the idle screw). The knocking had stopped. Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Knocking from a bad connecting rod, crank bearings, bad valve, they just don't get better. If they did an adjustment of something and it's GONE....you're OK in my opinion. You don't quiet a major engine problem with a tweak. Rich

Had knocking on a 73 VW bug. Turned out air was getting into the cylinder.

So Rich. If it was one of those things wrong that you listed. Would it knock even if it was idling? Or just when it's being ridden? Thanks.

You'd hear it all the time but it would get worse with RPM.

If they do "repair" it,,and if Rich is correct (and he generally is on this kind of thing),,and you decide to grab it ,,i would be taking that thing on at least a 10-15 mile test blast just to make sure they have the issue under control,,,,this thing has 5000 miles on it?

I hate to sound like a drag here but cooling issues at 5 kilometers (3 miles?) would have more than my eyebrows raised,,,,,,i'd put it to them this way and maybe they'll bite at it,,,and get it in writing,,,"i'll take the repaired scoot but if there's any more heat issues it's new engine time",,,,i've had more than one engine "heat knock" from overheating,,,and they probably will sort it out,,i 'm not trying to be an alarmist,,,just didn't want to see you get handed a problem child,,,,,see i had my soapbox all lacquered and polished up

I was thinking on the other side of the fence. If the miles are that low how bad could it be? Did somebody drain the fluids and go down the e-way? I just don't think that much could have happened. Hyosungs do not show up from the factory like that. So what happened? I don't know but if they adjusted the knock out it can't be that bad. Having said that, there are no absolutes except: 1. nobody is going to guarantee anything and will bail if they do 2. nobody is taking this bike back, Tyco would have to unload it if it is damaged, easier said than done.

Agreed, Mike bought it, it's his, the shop is fixing (?) the heating problem. Hopefully the shop will warranty/guarantee/stand by their work. Anything else that goes wrong is business as usual.
