electrical woes a-plenty

Per Alleyopp's instructions, I looked for the Solenoid, what I found was this


yikes a cut cable...why?

down by the battery box I have this mess





a skinny red wire, 2 green wires and a white wire. When I hook a green and red wire to the battery I get turn signals, dash lights, tail light and the brake light works but thats it. The solenoid clicks but that is as far as I get. I have the ignition out of the bike because there is no key.

I got something else jumped in front but I havent been able to get a picture of it yet. Maybe after lunch.

The skinny red wire, see if down the line a little a TYPE FUSE is in line, if so that wire goes to the KEY to feed it 12volts. The Green wires are GROUND wires so follow them back and see where they are coming from. If they come from a plug or parts Ground those to the NEGATIVE side of the battery.


The Solenoid, the wire that is not cut If it goes to the starter then the CUT WIRE goes to the POSITIVE POST on the battery.
Now the reason the SOLENOID is clicking means it is getting juice when you squeeze the brakes but does nothing to the starter due to the cut wire.

i don't see a fuse but I'll look again. I tried to go from the solenoid terminal with the cut wire straight to the battery. I jumped the solenoid and the wire to the battery smoked and melted.

The NEGATIVE POST ON THE BATTERY MUST BE GROUNDED TO THE FRAME. The other wire that is NOT CUT on the solenoid does that go to the STARTER?

I connected the battery to the cut terminal of the solenoid, and though I had no lights when I jumped it I heard it try to turn over.

then my ground wire started smoking.


is that because there is no fuse?

Could be I don't know what wires you connected to get the lights and dash working. So maybe there is a short there someplace. OR you just held jumping the solenoid to long and got it to hot.
The fuse protects against something drawing to much juice and blowing crap out. So if the red wire goes to the key then it should have a 10AMP fuse.

The lights only worked when I had the red wire connected to the battery. So it would make sense that it goes to a fuse and powers the lights. I should get deep in there and see what's what.
What I know now is
The fuse is gone,
The battery wire to the solonoid is gone
The key is missing and unplugged.
I wonder what the white wire does. I see a plug that's cut with a white and green wire to it

If it was me I would get a generic diagram out and start there. The cut wire off solenoid was cut because of smoke the way it looks to me. Is the solenoid grounding the positive when energized? Anyway the only way I know to work thru some thing like this is go one thing at a time and since the starter works I would begin there.

And who ever cut the wire could have just as well have taken a wrench so you know there was a crude butcher working on it, beware of more stupid mistakes he made.

Lamp Wire!

You can go to any auto parts store and get a 10AMP fuse holder like this and get a couple of 10amp blade fuses for it. Then splice it into the thin red wire and connect it to the battery. If the FUSE BLOWS when you connect it to the battery that means you have a short somewhere that it it feeding juice to.

That helps, thanks. What is the R/R?

The R/R is the Regulator/Rectifier that is the one that takes AC voltage from the stator and converts it to DC to charge the battery and run some lights.

The CDI is what is important for the motor. The CDI takes voltage from the STATOR and then releases it to the COIL to fire the plug.
