So I've been doing a ton of research on headlights and cant find a definitive answer. I want to upgrade from a stock 35w but dont know what i can put in there that wont melt my housing or be to much power draw

I put a led headlight bulb in my klx. It has a definate high low beam unlike the cheap ones. It wasn't particlarly hard to get stuffed in there to replace an h4 bulb and it does run cool. But it was around 59 bucks. The reflector is important as I had to adjust a little. Best of all it is very bright .

Probably should have noted that my stock bulb is a ba20d/s2 type not an h4

Everything ive seen about leds though is that they scatter light way to much. I was looking at xenon halogens but idk of my housing is large enough to accommodate the heat they put out, especially in nc in the summer

The reason some of the leds scatter is the reflector not being matched and designed for regular bulbs. A lot of the cheap ones dim for low beam instead of lowering the beam. Mine had on each side upper corners on the low beam an objectionable higher spot. Taking my finger in front of the lens I found the bottom in center if covered eliminated it. So I painted it over just enough to make the pattern perfect.

Ok so i got in both bulbs, the 45w had a broken high beam, and the led flickers like crazy at idle till about 3500rpm

Sounds like the led is not seeing pure dc. With a good battery the DC coming from the battery should not be pulsing which is what causes flickering. An incandescent bulb would not show pulsing in the same circumstance because it would be too fast for the filiment to folow. I would make sure the wiring is right and you could try running the led directly off the battery as a test.

Also some scooters run the head lamp off ac from the stator so be sure yours is not one of them. A led must have 12 dc.
