Well, I just hooked up my CDI I had gotten a couple of years ago for when I would start on this project again, turned on the key and didn't even make it to holding the brake handle or pushing the starter button. Literally less than 5 seconds had passed. And, *POP* and literally that hole (in the first picture) shot out of the CDI. I have no clue if the bump on the back was there previous. But this happened to quick to cause that. I guess I had a bad one. And found out 2yrs later. olivertwisted

I believe I settled on this dealer. Seems they've sold several, and rather than a non ebay seller I found for a similar price with shipping... I'd never heard of that site... so, I have some recourse with Ebay. CDI

Have you got the battery in right? 2 smoked cdi's is kind of strange. New Battery is definitely in correctly. As noted earlier in the thread, I had it running with the CDI that was original when I parked it two years ago. That one would run... but heat up, die... repeat with lesser interval between dying. I duplicated that with the same old one when it smoked yesterday... in the video in this thread. That is the original CDI that smoked. Then, today, I put in the CDI that I had purchased 2 years ago to replae the original that I suspected as the problem.. as it is (well, WAS when Linhai was in it's heyday a couple years ago) that there were alot of bad cdi's off the assembly line. So, perhaps that cdi that I stuck in today was bad off the line... and it took me two years to be putting back together my scooter to discover this. Afterall, I DID have the scooter running yesterday on the original cdi that was in the process of going bad... James

It could be a fluke but, I'd venture to say that something else that is wrong is causing the failures, unless they both were from the same supplier /Lot# ? The 3rd one should rule out or confirm it. If the 3rd one fries (OR before , lol! It's up to you, of course) , I'd be having a look at the stator ,rectifier, and always the battery. It seems plausible to me that you may be having an electrical problem before the CDI. cloudsifter

The CDI that smoked earlier in the thread... came OEM with the scooter... throughut the forums there are mention of this type of symptom (dying, would restart, run little longer but for shorter time... rinse repeat till it fails) no way to know who made or supplied it the original one. I know the collective memory of the forums as old timers with linhais aren't around much anymore, but about 3 years ago or so I remember commonly reading about this problem... it seemed to come down to coil or cdi, then narrowed to CDI on alot of occasions. The second CDI that I had from two years ago which was in a box but could have been in the weather two years ago as well.... immediately fried with only the key 'on' and no attempt to 'start' it had happened yet, I took a pic and posted further back in the thread. I'll try the CDI that should be here in 2-3 days... Common problem bad cdi's scootdawg.proboards.com/post/238454/threadscootdawg.proboards.com/post/229291/threadSo, I'm hoping for success when I install the replacement CDI.

I was assuming that the second one was while starting. I'm also hoping for that quick success . I've read of many failing too. don't think that I've ever read or seen vids of one smoking like that though. I reiterate, I'm don't claim expertise on anything .I just happen to be the only one here with you, lol!. Cruising the forum, looking to give back where I can as, I received much help . Likely, many failed CDIs would eventually do so , if they didn't totally fail first, prompting replacement. If it does work out (Hope-hope-hope), don't forget to order another right away so you have a backup. Always a good idea cloudsifter

It's tough sometimes because I see OLD posts from years back and you can tell that the OP or whoever long ago left the forum- but yet I've come across something that might help someone else along the way and I don't want to be accused of resurrecting some old topic or thread that people have long forgotten about. olivertwisted

Yes, we do. I do have other things to do, both with my old 1984 truck (install wiper blades).... and still need to install the 'new' throttle cables in the scooter. (Had them for a couple of years, in-waiting.) Other things are I made a new thread asking if anyone knows if a certain ebay roketa windshield will fit my scooter, and also emailed the seller and I am going to measure my old one (which is still intact, but a shorter one) and see if they think the measurements would work... olivertwisted

I looked at the link, and yah, i really don't want to get into making my own at all. And, even if I don't find a longer one... the old one is not broken.. it's just the original shorter one... and the air in Albuquerque is thinner anyway so less wind... and it never really bothered me, anyway, with the scooter. Also going to once I know the scooter will run, look into the HID lights... I already installed 55/60W headlights a few years ago and they work just fine. So, that shouldn't be too much of a problem, just maybe some modifying wiring (or not) and deciding where to hide the little boxes that come with the HIDs. olivertwisted
