A 1987 Helix/Fusion(as it was sold here as) was advertised in our eqivalent of Craigslist. Got it for NZ$200 with only 18000kms on the clock. Rego elapsed in 2004 when all the body panels were taken of to give it a spruce up. Well that never happened and it sat in a shed for 6 years. Picking it up on Thursday. Kiwiscoot PS where can I get a service manual for it??

Wow Kiwi. Too bad you didn't buy that a couple months ago when you had the cold months to work on it. Now you're coming into riding season. Good luck!

Man, go for the Mad Max look in the last pic. I swear, I don't know what Honda was thinking with that original design, that is the ugliest damn thing. I guess it's safe to say that now they're so outdated. Rich

I think it'd use a different seat, my butt hurts just looking at that thing, but yeah, that Urban Assault version looks like the nutz.

I showed my wife the mock-up of the rat-scoot yesterday evening with tread plate runner-boards, etc. - BUT somehow she did not seem that enthusiastic about it. Said then she will not ride it like that. A yellow "flying banana"/ "cruising custard square (CCS)" it will have to be then. ;D Petrol pump work, turned engine over by hand after squirting oil into the cylinder. Looking into the engine thru the spark plug hole the engine looks quite clean. Spark plug had a good colour too. Oil not very dirty. the throttle butterfly on the carb is sticking which caused the throttle cable to break when I tried it. That's tonights job to get the butterfly working smoothly and remove the throttle cable to get it fixed. Front brake needs a good clean and new brake fluid as it's binding. I am impressed as all looks just like it left the factory, nobody messed with this scoot, which is a good thing. All rubber components looks good too, no cracking, etc. Engine should be running by this weekend I would think. happy scooting Kiwiscoot.

nice, that's a good project to tinker(bell).. definitely option 2 is better, the urban assault scooter, with a fishtail looking muffler, and the seat is taken from a riding mower. it's a good idea if you can modify the front cowling, give it a little trendy look.,, btw,how much is NZ$200 in US dollar??

Hmmm... If the online converters are accurate, that would would be about USD$150. I'd say that's not a bad deal!

Seeing this thread kinda makes me regret not jumping on a Helix I saw for sale here in similar condition. I think he was asking about $250 USD. Clean title, everything, but it just been sitting for a long time. I think the only reason I didn't was because I'm not a fan of the Helix styling. But now, the idea of a Rat Scoot is appealing... Maybe I'll keep my eyes open for another one.

Well if there is a whole proliferation of rat-scoots, don't blame me - Bashan started it with his naked scoot. These machines do look wicked without the covers. Looks like something that should be in Afghanistan. USD150 with a brand new Pirelli SL26 back tire -USD40 worth) makes it US110 for the scoot - a bargain in my book. Well got the engine started yesterday evening. No smoke and it ran just fine. I did not run it to long as I haven't cleaned out the cooling system yet. One of the throttle cables broke which will be fixed today. Tonight it will be the variator and I'll have a look in the clutch too. Tomorrow the cooling system, good clean with coolant cleaner then new coolant. Friday the binding front brake/tires and maybe Saturday a running rat-scoot. The seller is going overseas so the idea is to get it assembled ASAP to see what parts are missing. I miss the front louvered cover and the rubber mats for the runner boards. One good thing is that this scoot does not have the usual Helix problem of a crazed speedo window. Does not look like it spend much time in the sun. woohoo this is fun! ;D Kiwiscoot

Kiwi,
I am so jealous of you right now. I never really like the looks of the helix ( just not MY taste ) but then again, never thought of what it might look like naked. WOW!! Got a whole new attitude about them now. Definitely the rat rod for attacking your back road twisties! I sure in your hands it will end up being brought back to life as a kick a$$ machine. keep the pix coming and good luck.

well progress sofar is: 1.) got two new tires put on. NZ$120 for a Metzeler on the front. If the new Pirelli tire I got with the scoot is the same price, then it makes the scoot a bargain at NZ$80!! 2.) front brake was seized, so overhauled that and bled the front brake. 3.) checked and greased the back brake. 4.) changed the oil and cleaned the filter. 5.) took the variator off. It needs some new sliders, but looks fine otherwise. 6.) took the clutch off - the shoes are shot and needs replacing. Belt seems to be OK.
So the journey of discovery continues. Kiwiscoot
