Quick question here. On my Jr Battery Tender I have the option of using the Alligator clips or the round connectors. The instructions say to put the positive clip on the red terminal and the negative to a body bolt. I've been doing it that way for a year now.
I was thinking if I could hook up the positive and negative connectors directly to the battery and run the connector wire out the side of the scooter all I would need to do is plug the tender in and connect the male and female connector. Is this possible? I go back many years and when we charged a battery it was positive to positive and negative to negative on the battery as we never grounded the negative wire to a body bolt. Same thing with using jumper cables. What changed?

I remember reading that when I wired in my battery tender leads, but I just connected it directly to the battery terminals. I left the pigtail under my seat, near where my air box is, so I can easily connect the charger and I don't have a wire dangling out in the open. Works beautifully.
If I'm not mistaken, they recommended not connecting the negative cable to the negative terminal directly for something along the lines that you may somehow ignite a cloud of hydrogen gas surrounding the battery. Seriously.

Speedracer, I have the Jr. Battery Tender and I have it connected directly to the Battery with the Quick Connect just under the seat. The Quick connect also has a Fuse on it as well which is nice. It works fantastic although I have only plugged it in just to check how my battery is holding up and it always is 80% charged and fully charges in about 30 minutes. Alleyoop

All hooked up. How much easier it is now to just plug in the Tender and get the battery back to full power.

I have all my scooters wired with this device to charge battery or use accessories www.powerlet.net part number www.powerlet.com/product/luggage-electrix-connector-cigarette-socket/287 PTB-003 It conects to the batery and goes through the wall and you can plug a batery charger into it or you can plug the adapter wich is a cigarett jack to plug accessories in. It comes with the instuctions on how to install and how to use I used a solder iron to get through the wall and a rat tail file my scooter does not have a maual kick start so I have to make sure the battery is charged Please let me know what you think It works great Louie from st paul mn lavoyermn@q.com

I have mine wired directly to the battery and then ran a little bit of the cable out through an access hole on the side.

dunno why the instruction says to attach the negative onto the body bolt,,it doesn't make sense. the battery has a bolt for the negative, make use of it. /these trickle/float chargers maintainers gives out very small amount of amps (1.7 i guess) that doesn't give too much stress on the batt while charging.and reconditions it as well,,that's why maintainers make the batt last longer. conclusion: the higher the amp output and the faster the battery charges the more stress it gives to the batt pins and the shelf life(so to speak) of the batt will be shorter. so stay away from quick chargers. ooops i think i'm sailing away from the topic, sorry

They recommend putting negative to frame as sparks at battery could cause it to explode. Had this happen to me on a car. Now I always attach negative to ground well away from battery.

If the connectios are tight and with a built in fuse there is little chance of a spark.

The old wet cell lead acid batteries produced hydrogen gas when charging. This is very explosive and that is why the remote connection to the ground terminal was recommended. The newer AGM sealed batteries are much safer. There will be no sparks if you make a secure connection on the battery terminals. I put 12v accessory sockets (cigarette lighter types) connected directly to the batteries on my scoots and adapted the charger cable so I can plug into this socket.

I agree Cruiser my Jr Tender also has a fuse just in case, and I made sure the connection to the battery was tight. With the new sealed batteries I haven't heard of any of them exploding.

gee I allways rember not to smoke around a charging battery or while giving or getting a boost. with an installed plug that is away from the battery reduces the risk

I agree I have my tender hooked positive to positive and negative to negative straight to battery, and the plug stuck under seat so I can plug in without opening the seat. But I have also have hooked the negative side to chargers and jumper cables up to a bolt or part of frame anything to ground it out before on other things liking jumping car, lawn mower, etc... but I would hook the negative straight to battery on the tender IMO?
