I drove a truck for the last 15 years the last 13 hauling mail. Got diagnosed with type 2 diabetes after ending up in the hospital last month with a blood sugar level of over 630. I'm now on insulin so can't drive anymore. I'm thinking of going back to school like a 2 year technology school. Considering a Machinist program but am open to suggestions. It has to be something that there are openings for and the pay is decent.

Sorry to hear you have lost your job due to your health. A machinist is a good job and there are many companies that are looking for machinist. But you should first find out if the type of machinist job your contemplating are available in your area and or near by. Alleyoop

Also I believe most jobs in the machinist field are now involving cnc. "computer control of the machine" I would love to be young enough to get into some thing like that too. What alley said really hits home too. no sense training in a brand new field if there isn't any one hiring in your area unless you are planning a move. john

Sorry to hear your situation. I am an envelope machine mechanic by trade for 26 years. A few years ago business went down hill with economy. The company I work for started laying off. I felt my job was in jeopardy as my hours were cut. So I followed my passion and became a locksmith. and am starting my own business.

Wow, that's hard. I'll be praying for you. It's really hard to lose a job you've invested so many years in.
Hey Roy, congratulations! Enjoy!

Problem is after I got my locksmith certification nobody wanted to hire me due to lack of experience. So to get experience decided to start my own business. Its a big investment though. Need to buy a vehicle and any tools I may need for a variety of different jobs. Its unprofessional to show up on a job and not have the right tools.

Roy Yes, it can be rough, especially since you have to start your own business, but you'll do it! Just remember to put most of the money back into the business for a few years. You need to have it well established before you can count on an income from it. I know that sounds hard, but it will be worth it eventually.

better to go and work for someone for free to gain experience , if the owner is decent he will buy you lunch and pay for your car fare. If you can proove yourself he will put you on the payroll within 3 weeks.

jhbietz, that is harsh. Been there myself. Check my other post and "your in like Fline". Least I can do. Best wishes for you. better to go and work for someone for free to gain experience , if the owner is decent he will buy you lunch and pay for your car fare. If you can proove yourself he will put you on the payroll within 3 weeks. Only thing wrong with that is people won't go for it because they're scared of getting sued. Even if you "work for free" and get hurt, LAW SUIT!!! M/C

My mother lost her job after 35 years. They "eliminated" her position and almost went into foreclosure. Insulin does not mean you can't drive anymore!!! It sucks yes, but many companys like First Fleet still need qualified drivers. Just make sure you eat right and test daily!! I assume delivering mail was a govenment job with lots of turn arounds. That won't be healthy any more. Maybe apply for a local gig like Miller, Coke, Pepsi 5-10 local stops a day. Good luck and I hope only the best for you and your family
