My new scooter project.....and the problems begin. By thetucks (Read 2,025 times)

I have been driving the tar out of my vog 260 that I bought a little while back. It runs awsome, and i can drive in the winter with my new givi windshield i got for it. which means i got the fever....

I then came accros an opertunity to buy another scooter. Its a 150cc touring scooter. it says saturn on the side. the guy didnt know what was wrong other than he rode it to the store one day and and when to start it back to leave and the starter just clicked. so he needed money and was selling it. I didnt care what was wrong when he told me how much he wanted for it I just said ill take it. He said he wanted to get $75 but would let me have it for $30. Clear title and everything. I couldnt resist even if the motor was blown. So I took it home and began to check it out.... here is a pic of the scooter. the windshield is off in this pic.

the first thing I did was try to start it. yep just a click when I try to push the start button. so I took all the plastics off the back and sides of the scooter and went to check it out. I got me a big screw driver and crossed the 2 terminals on the solonoid. It tried to start but made a growl sound from the starter first. I stopped right away because I new the solonoid is out. I then took the starter off to test if it was bad also. off the scooter it did the same thing but moves very slowly. so I took it apart. ( im the kind of guy I have to see how stuff works. thats when I found the problem...... oil filled the starter. which brings me to my first question. is oil suppose to be in the starter? ive worked on cars before and there was not any oil in any of them. Im going to clean it up and put it back together to see if it will work tonite. please let me know if you have any info of this problem. thanks and sorry about the long babbling.

Let me be the first to ask.

Is the battery fully charged, and good?

Does it have a kick start? If so will it start that way?

oh yes forgot to mention. the battery is good. over 12.8 volts. and yes it has a kick stand but I have not tried to use it. Ive never been very good with those things.lol. I try it and see.

ok success.... she runs. I emptied all the oil out the starter and cleaned the brushes and the copper things that are there and put it back on. 2 cranks and she fired right up. and runs smooth.

But the question remains how did the starter fill up with oil. I've never heard of that, but for $30 bucks who cares you can't go wrong.

thats what im trying to figure out. i have a theory. the guy i bought it from said he laid it down on a trailer to haul it home. i wonder if the oil ran in while laid on its side or is it suppose to be there?

Yes, it probably did run in there, and no it's not supposed to be there. The starter should have a little rubber seal on the neck and the shaft should be sealed. There is oil on the crankcase side but down in the sump. The little that gets up by the starter shouldn't fill it up, electric motors don't run well in oil....well some of them do but that's a different tale. Keep an eye on that, if it keeps filling the starter check the rubber seal and you may have to get a new starter. There's a manual called Z Bike in the Tech section, read it over, it's got some great photos of that area about 3/4 of the way through. Anyway, I wanted to tell you I hate you for finding a basically free project bike. Rich

Thanks guys. I didn't think it was suppose to be there. It did have the rubber o ring around the lip so I assume its the laying it down that put it in there. But anyway it runs great. And I just couldn't pass it up. But I don't think I'll be going to any casinos anytime soon I think I used all my good luck up. Thanks

ok guys i have another question. What makes the solonoid go out? I replaced the solonoid on this scoot already. I have started it fine quite a few times. then i put all the panels back on the scoot and now the solonoid is out again. what gives??

never mind..... it was the battery the whole time. it read 12.8 volts but when put under load it flattened out. I put the original solonoid back on( the one I thought was bad originally) and now its working. i get a little ancy sometimes. thanks.

Welcome to the club pal, welcome to the club. I don't know how many times I just started tearing the hell outta things and then realized I could have fixed it many steps earlier. Anyway, I think that's one we all should keep in mind, sometimes a problem doesn't show up until you stress the system. How many CVTs have looked normal on a cursory inspection yet had a stuck roller for example. Rich

ok im still having other problems with this thing. when it warm it fires right up on the first click and purrs great. but when its cold it takes for ever to start. and its very irratic with its idle. it revs up and down even dies some if I dont catch it and give it a little gas. also i noticed after i drive it a bit around when I stop and let it idle it seems to run ruff even sounds like a bit of aback fire or stutter or something. any clue what could cause this? thanks.

Sounds like the Enricher is not working properly or at all.
